Autoreply best way

Hello,

I have installed qmail-ldap. Some of my user use auto-reply
functionnality but auto-reply bounce because original message is a spam
and has not a valid address.

What is the best to auto-reply without increasing spam ?

- Don't do auto-reply at all ?
- Carefully detect incoming spam andreject delivery (and so autoreply) ?

How do you handle auto-reply in business enviroment ?

Thanks for your experience!

Julien

I always suggest 1) but if a good spam filter is in place like in 2)
autoreplys become a minor problem.

I also suggest that customers use "role accounts" and an incident
system whenever possible.
So for urgent business mails they always are in a pool and a colleague
can take over/contact the customer in case of holidays, ...
Also helps with legal requirements for archiving.

In my experience, the majority of auto-replies are useless. A message
saying I'm not going to get a response is not noticably more informative
than no response.

In addition to spam filtering, there's a bunch of well known
heuristics specific to autoresponders that greatly reduce the amount
of blowback. The most important are to reply only when the
recipient's address is on the To: line, and to send a response to any
particular address no more than about once a week.

R's,
John

PS: At some point I want to set up a web site called
come-rob-my-house.com where I post all of the random out-of-office
replies I get.
