Note this is getting offtopic, and I don't particularly care why the performance we saw sucked, as I wasn't the one administering the box. If I thought it was an inherent property of ZFS, I wouldn't have phrased my report the way I did. For those curious, hardware wasn't a problem. The filesystem in question was sitting on top of four disks (with nothing else on them), and the server had 2 dual-core Opterons (running 64-bit mode) and 8GB of memory. As I said, I gave the sysadmin two weeks to try getting the performance up to scratch before reverting the box to Linux+ext3, which solved our performance problems. Maybe the sysadmin could or should have done more, but I can't argue that point, and it doesn't belong on this list in any case.
