[OT] - How exactly does "save a copy on the server" work?

I apologize for the slight off-topic post but I'm trying to figure out
why, after moving my maildirs from my qmail server to an nfs server,
people are pulling duplicates of mail they deleted months ago. The only
thing they seem to have in common is that they set the "leave a copy on
the server" flag in their MUA. Does it have to do with a timestamp?
inode? what? Any insight would be appreciated.

Yes, the message IDs have changed, so the MUA thinks they're new messages.
Exactly why depends on whether you're using POP or IMAP and exactly which
POP/IMAP server software you're using.

Adrian, Charles, thanks for the reply. It makes sense now.
