Just a thought, but you might want to keep the Win32 API's in mind
when you work on this crap.
Win32::GetANSIPathName(FILENAME)
Win32::GetFullPathName(FILENAME)
Win32::GetLongPathName(PATHNAME)
Win32::GetShortPathName(PATHNAME)
While I was doing Win32 dev few things annoyed me more than the fact
that File::Spec refused to use them to do anything.
