ntop on Windows 2003 Terminates Unexpectedly

Hello.

We have been running a copy of ntop 3.3.2 on a Windows 2003 Standard Server for nearly two years without any problems using binaries purchased from nmon.net.

Around the first of October, two weeks ago, ntop stopped updating. When we attempt to restart the service we receive an on-screen message that the service has terminated unexpectedly and the only entry in the System event log is:

-----
The ntop for Win32 service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this x time(s).

Event ID 7034
-----

Event ID 7034 just means, "Service Stop Operations." Not a very useful error message to say the least.

Microsoft updates are applied regularly to this server but we cannot recall a specific update applied prior to this failure. No other software was installed nor were there any configuration changes made.

I know the majority of the responses I receive are going to tell me to run ntop on Linux. That ntop is much more stable on Linux. Etc. Linux is not completely out of the question but we would prefer to exhaust our Windows troubleshooting options before investing the time, energy, and money in setting up another server.

Any assistance with this error would be appreciated.

I *think* you get some additional support from nmon - have you contacted
them directly? They key players are on this list, but maybe you'll get
more prompt reply fron nmon directly? Not many run the windows version,
including me, so unfortunately less minds to help out.

I try all the basic things, such as disabling /stopping any apps,
services, etc. that don't NEED to be running and see if it will start.
Also, maybe try to start EtherReal / WireShark or someothre wlibpcap app
to see if it works OK? Lastly, make sure whatever user / account nTop
is using is OK - and nothing has changed there.
