I am trying to find a good web usage reporting solution for a client. NTOP seems the most promising so far and I am in the process of setting it up, but cannot find any info on doing what I want to do. Essentially, I would like to connect the device to a monitor port on their switch, or on a hub with outbound Internet traffic. Then I would hope to be able to create reports about which internal IP addresses when to which URL's, sorted by users, sites, etc, on a weekly and/or monthly basis. For the life of me I cannot find a good solid open-source solution that does this, and the lower cost commercial solutions don't have good reporting capabilities. Beyond that, we get into a product such as Websense, but that seems like overkill if we just want to report. Due to the "reporting only" desire of this client, I would like to stay away from inline solutions like Squid or DansGuardian. The client doesn't want to change settings on their clients, and they don't want the risk of a computer crashing (squid) and taking down their internet. It seems that the promiscuous sniffing solution should be pretty straightforward, but I haven't had a lot of luck yet. Hopefully NTOP can doing something along these lines?
