host contacts counters - running total or rate?

Is the host contact counters - the ones used for the Health flag - is it
a running total since nTop was started? Or is it a rate of contacts,
such as 200 in last 60 mins?

If it's NOT a rate - how hard to make it so? A running total has SOME
value if you restart ntop often, but after a while ALL hosts would
exceed the threshold.

If it IS a rate, how can I tune it? The threshold and the time period?

Thanks!

Gary

PS: I'll start digging around the source as well.
