Recommended Kernel version for pf_ring and TNAPI

I have a few question about PF_RING and TNAPI.

I was wondering if there is a recommend kernel version for building pf_ring
and TNAPI.

Also, should the latest DCA module(1.9) from Intel be used or should I use
the dca module bundled with the kernel(1.8 in kernel 2.6.30).

Finally I am interested in any system hardware recommendation that people
have had success with TNAPI (specifically Motherboard or specific system
models).

Thanks for any feedback you can give me.

Re: Recommended Kernel version for pf_ring and TNAPI [In reply to]

Craig
I suggest to use kernel 2.6.26/30 that includes DNA and I/OAT.

I personally use Supermicro machines. In general hardware is not an
issue but some TNAPI users reported me problems with some computers
that seem to have issues with MSI-X used by TNAPI.

I have found some Dell servers to have crippled BIOS that does not fully
support TNAPI. They have issues with DCA.

Thats good to know. Do you know which models? We have Dell PowerEdge
1950s and their new R610 systems that we were looking into using for this.

Nick,

Can you name specific model numbers? We have PowerEdge 2960's that we are
considering for TNAPI, any experience with them?

Re: Recommended Kernel version for pf_ring and TNAPI [In reply to]

Beyers and Craig-

I can test it on a number of servers, but I know it does not fully work
on the Dell 2950 III series. My experience has been that the drivers
compile, but you will see a message about DCA being disabled in the
BIOS. When I enabled TNAPI, I did see multiple queues, but errors are
flagged for a reason, so I did not fully trust TNAPI on it.

I took the IOAT DMA/DCA issue up with Dell Support, but they were of no
use and the error remains. I attempted to compile the latest IOAT
dirvers from Intel, but they did not compile on the OS, so I stopped
working on the issue. I have a wide range of Dell server, I run CentOS
5.3 on them.

Recently I started investing in SuperMicro-bases systems from Xi
Systems. The Xi Systems units are cheaper and work far better with Linux
and various Linux based apps. Specifically, I have tested LinuxPPS
(PPS/GPS NTP servers), TNAPI, and TPROXY/Squid. I the SuperMicro
systems, I run CentOS and Debian.

Hope the this info helps.

Nick

Re: Recommended Kernel version for pf_ring and TNAPI [In reply to]

I should make one clarification:

There is no DCA setting in the BIOS, just a generic enable/disable for
IOAT DMA Engine, hence the call to Dell.

Nicholas
I know that somebody told me that there's a software somewhere on the
internet that enabled DCA on Dell as they do not support it on BIOS.
Please follow this link http://timetobleed.com/enabling-bios-options-on-a-live-server-with-no-rebooting/
that explains how to do it.

Cheers Luca

Thanks, I'll have a look at that.
