VE usage stats via SNMP

I know this has been discussed before, but the most recent thread I
was able to find was at least 2 years old. I need to get usage stats
for a VE via SNMP. Can this be done? I have opened a case with
Brocade, but the person I spoke to didn't seem to know much. Can
anyone please help? Thank you.

Re: VE usage stats via SNMP [In reply to]

I believe from memory they said it would likely never happen due to hardware limitations. A quick check on 5.1.00b shows that the counters are still all zero.

Re: VE usage stats via SNMP [In reply to]

Hi,

we also had that discussion with Brocade. We were told this is not
supported and won't be for the old linecards.

There are 2 humble alternatives:
-You can use the "byte-accounting" / "vlan-accounting" feature within the
vlan. Maybe it's enabled global / by default with newer releases.
But this will only record the inbound traffic.

-You can setup rate-limiters for each vlan on each interface and query
them with SNMP. That's what Foundry suggested.

But in both cases you cannot use the Interface-MIBs, afaik you need to use
those (only tried the first way):
enterprises.1991.1.1.3.2.7.1.25
enterprises.1991.1.1.3.16.1.2

If you have an MLXe you could buy the 8x10G Cards, they will have that
feature.

Rolf

I believe the new 24x1Gbps card also has these counters(?). I don't
have one to confirm though.

I have the MLXe with the 24 port x card. I can confirm still no counters. Just the 8 port 10g card.

Re: VE usage stats via SNMP [In reply to]

I have the 8 x 10Gbe card and am getting traffic stats of 0 for the
VE. What am I doing wrong?

From show mod: SL 1: NI-MLX-10Gx8-M 8-port 10GbE

Grab the ifIndex
# snmpwalk -v2c -c .... ifdescr | grep v116
IF-MIB::ifDescr.16777332 = STRING: v116

Try to grab in counters for the ifIndex
# snmpwalk -v2c -c .... ifInOctets.16777332
IF-MIB::ifInOctets.16777332 = Counter32: 0

Try to grab out counters for the ifIndex
# snmpwalk -v2c -c .... ifOutOctets.16777332
IF-MIB::ifOutOctets.16777332 = Counter32: 0

If I am not mistaking it is just the 8 port xmr version which I don't think is out yet.

"The NI-MLX-10x8G modules supports VLAN counters on the ingress and
egress ports."

You have to configure this, apparently

NetIron(config)#statistics
NetIron(config-statistics)#extended-counters priority all
NetIron(config-statistics)#extended-counters routed-switched

(the middle line is enabled by default) and then you can do "sh vlan N
stat" and "sh ip int ve N stat". Nothing about SNMP in that chapter
of the easily findable but humongous NetIron 5.1.00 Configuration Guide.

Re: VE usage stats via SNMP [In reply to]

Hi,

did you also try the 64 bit Counter MIBs ?
32bit counters on a 10G port could be a overrun each 3-4 seconds, that's
not so suitability for daily use.
I cannot test myself because we use MLX and XMR only, no MLXe.

You don't need MLXe for the 8x10 blade, hSFMs are enough.

Niels,

Your commands in fact fixed my issue and I am now receiving stats. Thank you very much for the assistance.
