spurious optical-monitor syslog messages

Hi,

Quite some time ago, I had to enable the optical-monitor feature so
that I could get dB readings from the optic interfaces on two RX-8s
with 4XG cards.

It works really neatly! You configure it to send alerts every X
minutes if the light reading is lower than a given threshhold.

Unfortunately it sends low-power alerts for interfaces that have any
media installed but are disabled.

The messages look like this:

Nov 7 13:58:05 switch switch, ALARM: 2/3 optic tx bias low alarm
Nov 7 13:58:06 switch switch, ALARM: 2/3 optic tx power low alarm
Nov 7 13:58:06 switch switch, ALARM: 2/3 optic rx power low alarm
Nov 7 13:58:06 switch switch, WARNING: 2/3 optic tx bias low warning
Nov 7 13:58:06 switch switch, WARNING: 2/3 optic tx power low warning

...

they are being sent every minute, from two switches, about disabled
interfaces. Most annoying.

The problem is, I can't disable the alerts. The command is supposed
to be "optical-monitor 0" in global config mode - but that doesn't
seem to work. Neither does adjusting the value to a very high number,
to reduce their frequency. Neither does "no optical-monitor".

What am I missing? Has anyone come across this one?

I'm sure that rebooting the switch will make it go away, but I'd
prefer to solve it by understanding how this isn't a bug. (or, that
it is a bug :-))

Nick!
