maximum agitation to a filer

Hi toasters,

does anybody have a clue whats the maximum agitation is, a filer can
handle?

Maybe there is an official statement from netapp?!?

The background is, that our facility-department is planing to start some
aktivities near to our datacenter and we are afraid of any impact and
want to give them some limits.

Thankful for any thoughts!

Hey Jochen,
The weakest part in this is most likely the disks, they will start failing
more rapidly if they have to deal with shaking grounds etc. Offcourse, most
disks can handle shocks up to 3G according to the manufacturers, my
experience tells me that when you have movement of a a cm per second, disks
will start failing about twice as fast. Keep spares.
Heads dont contain any seriously moving parts, so as long as you keep the
fans blowing, they tend to be fine as long as your 19" rack is standing up.

My experience comes from a system that was in a datacenter while they were
demolishing the building nextdoor, which was attached to the building. Gotta
love steel-enforced concrete.

I've had a filer installed in a basement comms room whilst the building
around it and all the floors above it were ripped apart and converted
for datacenter use. Apart from needing a huge amount of dust blowing
out of it when we finally moved into the finished suite everything was
peachy.

Hey Chris and Nils,

thanks a lot for sharing your experience.
As our facility-dep will only build up a new fundament i think the
agitation will stay below those you had to handle.

This gives me a quite good feeling that everything will go smooth.
