mythtv dialog focus and guide problem

Hi,

My setup is getting better and better every day, but I still have two
things that
I have not been able to fix. I have FC1 installed with jarods guide.

First is that sometimes when I open delete or recording or some other
dialog, it is not focused. I have to retry few times or use mouse to
focus the dialog. Is there any way to correct this ?

Another one is that sometimes when I open the program guide, I can only move
the box once before it stalls. I just cannot do anything but go back.

You running full screen or windowed? I found full screen solves
a lot of these things.

Thats just not right, something's amiss there. I can scroll both directions
with no problem. Is you machine quite busy at the time? Sounds like
some prerequisite software might be missing.

Have you installed Mythweb? I find mythweb is way more convienent
than the program guide built in.

I've also seen something similar (in full-screen) on my FC1 (not fully
following Jarod's guide) setup, the delete or options dialog for a
recording will appear, but in a pale colour, I have to go back and
choose the menu again and it will appear in full-colour. I'm not sure
it's a focus thing or a screen painting thing. Just upgraded to FC2
(following Jarod's guide) so will let you know if it appears here too.

I've also experienced exactly this (again in FC1) and found that I had
to restart X to clear this behaviour. Will also keep you posted re
FC2.

I am running mythtv full screen.

I tried to change IceWM and I think those problems did not happen so
often, but it had a
downside. It blanked the screen every now and then and I could not get
it of with remote ..
well sometimes I could... I did not find any configuration to remove
this blank screen thing..

It was really ugly WM, but it was fast.

I have mythtweb and I like it, but I always have to fetch my laptop to
use it. Built in
program guide is really cool when it works. I only have 5 channels
configured so everything
filts well in screen and it is fast to use.

I have these same problems. I'm also using FC1, with KDE as my window manager.

It looks to me like a focus issue, not a screen painting issue. I
have to escape to the menu to try again, and sometimes it will take
several tries before a usable menu opens.

I think there have been some updates to the rpm's since I went to .16
so that might be my problem, but the focus was an issue with .15 as
well.

Definitely a focus problem. How do you fix it? Don't know--I've tried
a plethora of WM's, but I can't find out why certain (types of) Myth
windows don't get focus.

However, I do have a workaround. It's an ugly hack, but it works. See

http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv/users/82755

Just make sure the MythTV window does not start at 0,0. For a friend
who had this problem and is using a projector (and, therefore, had no
overscan settings), I modified the GUI position to 1,0 so that the pixel
0,0 is outside the MythTV window. By exiting and re-entering the MythTV
window with the mouse cursor (assuming focus follows mouse--i.e. Sloppy
or Semi-sloppy focus), full focus is returned to MythTV and all its dialogs.

The problem only exists after another (non-Myth) window receives focus.
Therefore, for all my commands that start other GUI apps (like xine), I
put " & movemouse" at the end of the command line (works better than the
shell script in the original post if you have spaces in your filenames).

HTH, and I wish I had a solution instead of an ugly workaround.

Just my 2 cents. I've never had focus problems with Myth using the LIRC
support. Are you using native LIRC support or something else to get
keystrokes to the app?

Two things can solve this:

1) Set your focus policy to "focus follows mouse" or
2) Use "ratpoison" as your window manager.

But the problem isn't LIRC's failing to send the keystroke to
mythfrontend (that works fine), it's that the Myth child windows do not
have focus, so the "current selection" isn't highlighted, and the
keystroke goes to the wrong Myth window (the main window instead of the
child that's above it). For example, the JumpPoints (which cancel
whatever is currently in progress and take you directly to a particular
location) still work when one of the child windows without focus is on
screen, so Myth is receiving keystrokes--just not the right Myth window.

That's the theory, but there's more to it. :)

I have Fluxbox with semi-sloppy focus (and have tried sloppy focus
(those are two versions of focus follows mouse) both with all
combinations of "focusLastWindow" and "focusNewWindows"), and it still
gives the partial focus problem--where only the main MythTV window
receives focus and child windows don't (i.e. Play Recording, Delete
Recording, "Are you sure you want to exit," and even the EPG--which
allows you to move one space in any direction then stops accepting input
as if each square in the EPG is a separate child window and focus isn't
transferred properly?). I even tried RatPoison (and TWM) and had the
same problem.

Since moving the mouse outside of the MythTV window and back inside
allows MythTV child windows to receive focus properly (and allows the
main window to continue to receive focus properly), I gave up trying to
figure it out and used the XTrap extension in a script to move the mouse
out of, then into the window after running an external GUI app. Note
that this means that "focus follows mouse" is definitely set as I'm
simply moving the mouse--not clicking it--with the script.

I'd love to find the real reason, but after about 4 hours of looking, I
decided that it wasn't worth the effort when I can make a simple (albeit
ugly) workaround...
