FTA Satellite Receivers

Does mythTV work with FTA satellite receivers (specifically a Pansat 2300)?
I just started reading on this subject today and am a little confused. I
was also looking at the Hauppauge WinTV PVR 250, but it says it only has a
125 channel tuner. If this is the case how are you getting it to work when
you have more channels? I do like the features of mythTV very much, but I
want to make sure it will do what I need before I spend the cash on the
hardware. Thanks in advance.

Yes.

Your satellite receiver is your tuner. From the satellite receiver, you
will send the signal to the PVR-250 using coaxial cable with an
F-connector, composite, S-Video, SCART, ...

If using coax/F-connector, the receiver will output the signal on some
channel, i.e. channel 3 or channel 4 (usually selectable, but we'll just
say 3 for now), so you will tune the PVR-250 to channel 3. You will
then change the channel on the satellite receiver, and it will output
the new channel on channel 3. Therefore, you will never need to go
above 125.

If using composite, S-Video, or SCART, you will be completely bypassing
the PVR-250's tuner. Therefore, you won't need to go above channel 125
(or even tune any channel on the PVR-250 for that matter).

Note, however, that you will need some way to control the satellite
receiver from your PC. If the receiver has an infra-red remote control,
you can do so with LIRC ( http://www.lirc.org ) and an IR transmitter
(commercial products are available, or you can build your own for less
than a dollar--or spend about $12 to make a much nicer transmitter). If
the receiver has a serial port (which may be a standard DB-9 (serial)
port or even an RJ-11 (phone) port), you could link the Myth box
directly to the receiver, but depending on whether others have already
done so, you might need to do some work to figure out how to control it
(i.e. how to send the commands over the serial connection).

I think you could get an FTA PCI card cheaper than a PVR-250.

That's a good idea...I had all but forgotten about them. Do you know if
this particular one will work with Linux and mythTV?

There is support in the 2.6 kernel for that card. You have to enable
the bt8x8 stuff under V4L ( and all its prereqs), then go under DVB for
Linux and it will be listed.

I have the card in a MythTV box I'm working on getting working. Having
problems with the Satellite alignment part.... :(

The Twinhan card should work with FTA on Mythtv, I would look for a better
price though. There is some good info on getting Mythtv and Twinhan working
at http://dvbn.net just search for mythtv+twinhan, I think you have to
register with them to be able to search for anything good.
There are some code hacks for mythtv there, I wish they were some
sort of plugins, that would be cleaner.

Could someone enlighten me a bit about this stuff? Are you telling me
that I can plug this card straight into the coax cables coming from my
Dish dish, and have access to the pure digital signals coming from the
satellites? What about encryption, etc? I thought all of that sort of
stuff was all smartcard protected.

I'd like to learn more about this stuff too, it sounds really
interesting.

Yes but, there are only a handful of Free to Air channels on the Dish
satellites, you can find them here

Most dish channels are encrypted, and it's illegal to decrypt them.
Discussions about that sort of thing should be kept on the down low.
Some providers use the standard DVB, which works with a DVB-S card, others
use more proprietary stuff like DSS which is not compatible.

Looks like all/most of those are music channels, too.

Yup, that's what I figured. Not interested in pirating tv, was just
hoping there might be a way to get a pure digital signal into my myth box.

so basically, I'd need to find a different satellite to point the dish
at, and buy my own receiver array to mount onto the dish. Too much
work. heh.
