Machine Lockups

This may or may not be mythtv related, but it's happening while using
myth, so I'll start here. I'm trying to do a slideshow in Images.
After a few pictures (the number varies), the machine locks up hard.
Sometimes I get a pattern blinking at me on the keyboard lights, but
sometimes I don't. If I hit the power button, rather than having to
hold it down for several seconds, the machine immediately powers down.
Syslog shows nothing that might indicate what is going on, and, since
the machine is locked up, I can't check the console to see if there is a
kernel panic message. Here are the specs on the machine:

Chaintech 7NIF2 MoBo
AMD Athlon 2400+ CPU
256 MB RAM
160 WD HD

Fecora Core 1
kernel-2.4.22-1.2197.nptl
kernel-module-nvidia-graphics6106-2.4.22-1.2197.nptl-1.0_6106-59.rhfc1.at
nvidia-graphics6106-1.0_6106-59.rhfc1.at
kernel-module-ivtv-2.4.22-1.2197.nptl-0.1.9-27.rhfc1.at
ivtv-0.1.9-27.rhfc1.at
mythtv-theme-photo-4-6.at
mythtv-themes-0.15.1-74.rhfc1.at
mythtv-theme-abstract-0.20040610-1.at
mythtv-suite-0.15.1-40.at
mythtv-theme-purplegalaxy-0.20031214-3.at
mythtv-theme-visor-0.13.1-4.at
mythtv-theme-gant-0.pr1-2.at
mythtv-backend-0.15.1-74.rhfc1.at
mythtv-frontend-0.15.1-74.rhfc1.at
mythtv-theme-Titivillus-0.20040619-3.at
mythtv-theme-sleek-0.35-2.at
mythtv-0.15.1-74.rhfc1.at
mythtvsetup-0.15.1-74.rhfc1.at

The file systems are ext3 on the OS partition, and ReiserFS on the
videos partition, in case that matters. The photos I'm viewing are on
the ext3 partition, and there are 262 pictures, in case *that* matters.

The box does not appear to be hot, as it feels very cool to the touch.

If anyone has any thoughts on what might be causing this machine to
lock, I'd sure love to hear them. Thanks a lot!

Re: Machine Lockups [In reply to]

I have been having hard lockups for a month now. I have not been able to
track it down either. Running two 250;s on an Athlon 2400, 256megs ram,
2174 kernel. It locks up once a day or every few days. Last night and
tonight it locked up right at 9pm. Yesterday it was not recording
anything at the time. Tonight it had just started to record a show when
it locked up. I caught it because I was watching a recording on my
frontend and it froze. I reset the backend and it started working for a
minute then froze again. I have not seen anything in the logs until
tonight when it had some ivtv firmware download errors (about 20 of
them) before the lockup. When it locks, I cannot access it at all,
trying to ssh into the backend gives me no route to host. I am using the
latest cvs version and ivtv 1.09

Re: Machine Lockups [In reply to]

For what it's worth, I'm getting the same thing on at least one of my
backend machines, amazingly almost exactly the same hardware, different os
build.

KnoppMyth R4
Asus A7N8X deluxe
Amd Athlon 2400+ CPU
512 MB ram
160 Seagate HD
Nvidia GeForce3 Ti-200 video card

Not sure what causes it, but it's REALLY locked up. My SSH sessions have
frozen, no new connections accepted, machine locked. Same two keyboard
lights flashing as well. It's the scroll lock and caps lock, btw.

What makes me think it's a software issue? This machine, same config, will
run 3dmark03, etc, for hours on end, no lockups, under XP.

Llove to know what it's being caused by.

Re: Machine Lockups [In reply to]

Sounds like a bad piece of memory to me. Linux pushes memory alot higher than windows. Try swapping out the memory from the pc that works good to the one that doesnt.

I had similar problems on a FIC AU13 (nForce2) mobo locking up hard
during builds. Same box was rock solid under windows.

Turning off the "CPU Disconnect" solved it for me. The windows drivers
handle the disconnect condition diffrently. Supposedly 2.4.27 will also
have this fix. In the meantime, you can simply turn off "CPU Disconnect"
in the BIOS if it has the option, or via "athcool off" which requires
the athcool package.

Last week after mucking with the system, the problem returned. After
hours a hair-pulling I realized that "athcool off" was not being run at
system startup anymore - put it back and problem vanished. I've also had
"noapm" on the bootline for a few months, as it seems to solve a problem
with the commercial detection causing crashes/lockups.

Running "athcool off" also fixed a problem I had on an MSI KM2L (Via
KM266) with a PCI IDE controller having terrible performance (but no
lockups) so I think it's relevant to all Athlon boards.

The only downside is that your cpu will run a tad warmer.

The issue is with the nforce2 chipset. I'd suggest upgrading R4V3.

Disabling APIC (in both the BIOS and the kernel) can also solve hard
lockups with nforce2 boards. My A7N8X Deluxe used to be plagued by
this. Recent kernels fix this problem too. FWIW, I still run with
CPU disconnect off because enabling it results in an annoying, high
pitched whine on the sound output.

Re: Machine Lockups [In reply to]

The weird thing is it has locked up on me the last two days at exactly
9pm. It took three reboots last night to get it stable. I have set the
ntpd to only update once a day. I disabled commercial flagging
yesterday. I will see how it runs with that off. Commercials haven't
been flagged on most shows anyways. Maybe that is causing a problem.
