New blue-abstract theme 1.8

Hi everybody,

I just wanted to announce on the mailing list that a
new version of the blue-abstract theme is out.
It has undergone a major
rewrite. There were tons of changes, which can be seen in the changelog
[1] or on github [2].

Check out the screenshots on the wiki [3].

Please tell me if you find some improvements or issues.

Best regards

Robert S

This is good news!

Will it be viewable from the automatic theme downloader? Today it still
shows version 1.7.

Thanks for all the work on this. It is my favorite theme. Sorry to all
other themers :)

Nice. I liked it before but the new look is great. But i have a few
problems.

First the channel icons.
Most of the icons is a little cut of on all sides.Second, there is always
some other picture showing in the background of the channel icon. Looks
like a white square with a blue circle in the bottom right corner. And
inside that blue circle there is a little white outline of a TV.

In the Watch videos view i always use the list view. I guess it is a matter
of taste, but i think it would be nice to have the cover to the right of
the list. Since you read from left to right it feels a little strange to
have the cover first and the list second. At least for me. Would also like
to see the list is a little wider so the edge of the outer edges of the
list and cover areas align with the areas below.

No big deal, i think i could adjust this myself if you don't like the
suggestion. Otherwise a really good theme.

For me it already is. Didn't notice the post before yesterday, but it was
in the theme chooser at that time. But i have noticed some times that not
all skins show all available themes. Try to switch to another skin and see
if this new version appears.

Exactly, you're seeing all themes because you're running master. For a
theme to show up in the theme downloader of a stable version of
MythTV, the theme will have to be enabled for that particular MythTV
version.

His post to the wiki: http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Blue_Abstract_Theme suggests
that the new theme is for 0.25... I guess the question is now, how does it
get enabled?

Hi everyone,

you can see I have created two branches, one for 0.25 and one for
0.26. You can see it on
https://github.com/MythTV-Themes/blue-abstract-wide/network

This
should get picked up by the package script. there should be a theme
available then for 0.25 and later for 0.26 frontends. Maybe the package
script runs only once a day.

Best regards

Robert

The easiest way, is to create appropriate branches on github, and then
let Chris know what those branches are called. For example:

master equates to the master branch of MythTV
fixes/0.25 equates to the 0.25 version of MythTV

It looks like those have already been created for blue-abstract, so it
is just a matter of letting Chris know, so he can make the
configuration changes to pull the appropriate versions. Once Chris
sets it up, then those will automatically sync every day.

I have to update the packaging script to package new branches for new
MythTV releases. I already had it packaging blue-abstract-wide for
MythTV v0.25, but needed to update it to package the 0.26 branch
which you just created. I just did that and tested, so it will show up
when the packaging script and ftp rsync happens in ~11 hours or so.

Themes get packaged twice daily, at 0400 and 1600 UTC. Then the OSU
FTP rsync happens a half hour or so later and the theme index .zip files
are rebuilt at 0440 and 1640 after the FTP rsync has occurred. So,
new theme versions show up after 0440 and 1640. If the theme is on
the FTP site, but not visible in the Theme Chooser, you can always
delete ~/.mythtv/tmp/themes.zip to force the frontend to re-download
the theme index zip.

One think I've noticed that bugs me... and it's likely my system more than
anything... but navigating around the video gallery causes some major
flickering.

Every time I move to a new video it redraws every cover on the screen...
first displaying the default image you set, then drawing the cover on
top.... sure it happens almost instantly, but it causes the whole screen to
flicker so much that I'm afraid I'll give my wife a seizure if I move
around to fast.

I don't remember it doing this on the previous version, and now that I've
upgraded I can't revert back to confirm. I believe that the last version
had some sort of cursor while this version 'zooms' into the cover... I
suspect that's what is causing the redraws.

I am glad you got rid of the background images in the gallery view... they
were always too slow to load and hurt the 'smooth' factor, but this
constant redrawing is far more annoying.

I have plenty of RAM free (300MB), and even moving around as fast as I can
doesn't push my CPU above 30%. It could be because I run diskless (iscsi)
which may mean added latency to load the images (but I'd assume they'd be
in RAM after a pass through all the videos).

Anyway... it's still my favorite theme by a large margin, but I would
really appreciate any tips on how to resolve this one little thing.

A couple of minor things, since your asking for feedback (a lot of this is
probably out of your control):

- The date/time area at the top is too narrow to fit a long date format
(mine currently says "Fri 14 Sep, 3:01 am", and fits, but it wouldn't if it
were "Thu 23 Sep, 12:00 am" due to the larger letters). Great use of that
screen real estate by the way, I love it.

- The background image when the "Watch Videos" menu item is selected is
considerably brighter (bright wall in bg) than other menu option
backgrounds... draws my attention away from the menu every time I move past
it.

- No background on the "Watch a Disk", "plugins", or "Advanced" menu
options when using the "Media Center Menu Theme". there are others, but
those are the only ones on the main menu missing a background image.

- the default cover image is the same for folders as it is for videos...
not sure if it can be changed, but it would be nice.

- the background image flickers when browsing through episodes of a show on
the Watch recordings screen... probably nothing you can do about it, but if
the background image stays the same, why must it draw the blue background
then redraw the artwork again causing the flash of blue every time I scroll
up or down the list?

THANKS AGAIN FOR A GREAT THEME!

Hi Joseph,

thanks for the information. I have noted the issues regarding

*
date width
* video background image too bright
* missing background
image in watch disc
* folder cover image in videos

and will adress
them in the next release. I have also noticed that the channel icon
background image is too showing when the actual channel icon is visible
and has transparency. I'll also fix that.

I also have this flickerung
when moving around, but I have this already since changing from 0.24 to
0.25. I don't believe ot has something to do with the theme but with the
image drawing or caching from MythTV itself. Maybe some developers read
this and know something about it.

Best regards

Robert

Hi,

I love the theme. One thing I noticed, is cut points do not show up in TV Edit. No matter what you do, all you get to see is the blue bar with no markers on it.

One thing I noticed, is cut points do not show up in TV Edit. No matter
what you do, all you get to see is the blue bar with no markers on it.

Hi Scott,

thanks for pointing it out. I have noticed it myself a while ago. I
have put it on my list. I'll fix it in the next version.

Best regards

Robert

Robert,

I downloaded version 1.8 a few days ago, and I'm very impressed with how polished it is. Thanks.

Cheers,

Jon

Is the edit-cutpoint problem supposed to be fixed in 1.8?
For me it is not

A few more issues I noticed while using the new version for a few days:
- The OSD element in top left corner is not taking GUI offsets into
account. I use different resolutions for video vs. GUI and while
watching recordings, the top left corner of the screen is outside the
viewport, so that this OSD element is only partially visible.
- I wonder why there are distinct background images missing for some
major menu points like Media Library.
- The upcoming recording entries aren't colored, which makes it hard
to determine the different state of the different recordings from each
other.
- The auto-scrolling of some text areas is far to fast, e.g. for the
episode descriptions. I'd rather have them not scrolling at all, so I
can always read the beginning of the description and hit INFO for the
complete text.

Oh, and it's too small too. For example today, even with English UI,
the minutes are cut off when it displays the date and time.

Regarding the
missing background images: I use my own (imho better structured) menu
(which you can activate in the appearance settings, it called
blue-abstract-menu). There I don't use the media gallery. I'll add the
background to it in the next version.

I'll add some color to the
upcoming recording text.

Unfortunately there is no option to change
the scrolling speed. I'll think about disabling it. You can still
disable the scrolling yourself in the xml file.

Regarding the top left
OSD element, I wonder if its a theme issue or another one. These are
multiple windows like osd_message or osd_input. There area is defined
like this: <area>0,0,1280,720</area>. So maybe the OSD part in MythTV
does not scale it correctly. I'll look into that.

Best regards
