Cheap USB IR receivers on ebay

Has anyone tried some of the cheap ir receivers on ebay such as:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/271000300944*

It says it's mce compatible but other receivers I have purchased in the
past didn't work with lirc. Was trying to find a few for less than 8-10$
before I go buy the more expensive dell versions. I like these because they
are so small and cheap.

No experience with that one, but have two of these:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Philips-Media-Center-Infrared-USB-Receiver-OVU412000-00-/220760296928?pt=US_Remote_Controls_Pointers&hash=item336656cde0

.....and they work a treat with my Harmony remote acting as an MCE remote.

Only problem I have is it doesn't seem to "turn on" when the box comes on,
just have to pull the USB cable and plug back in again and it's fine. Sure
there is a way to fix, but not looked into it yet.

http://rtr.ca/sapphire_remote/

I'm using this. Very happy. Except since it is as [additional]
keyboard the application you are using it on must be active window.

Plus 1 for that remote, best mythtv remote experience yet (for me). It
is ridiculously cheap, and ridiculously easy to set up. I use it for
xbmc as well without changing the keymap, one day I will get around to
that. The keymap is easy to change on the fly.

But for the OP, the device you pointed to is only $5.50. Get one, try
it, report back!

I haven't tried that one, but I always use the HP-branded ir receivers
from eBay. They're quite a bit larger, but they are fully LIRC and MCE
compatible. They use the default mceusb driver in a recent Linux
kernel (I think it's 2.6.35+), so no additional drivers are needed. In
Mythbuntu you just plug it in, select the MCE receiver option and
you're done.

I've been using this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sapphire-DVD-VCD-MCE-Remote-Control-USB-Receiver-/270742743388?pt=US_Remote_Controls_Pointers&hash=item3f0986695c#ht_1319wt_1186

While that is the same remote, it is not who I bought mine from. I just
did a search and grabbed the first one I found.

Mark Lord, one of the users on this list wrote a replacement driver, and it
works great with all the 'stock' keys in myth. It does not use LIRC, and
it is extremely easy to setup. You also have customizations available such
as long key presses, accelerated repeats, etc.

Driver and Mark's description is here:
http://rtr.ca/sapphire_remote/

Mark: I noticed that the wiki page for remotes does not list the sapphire
explicitly, but I assume this remote would fall under this category from
the wiki. http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Generic_HID_%22MCE%22_Remotes Care
to weigh in?

I've bought several of these and they work great:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00123UGWQ/ref=pe_175190_21431760_cs_sce_dp_1

$22 may not look cheap, but if it works without headache, it's worth it to
me.

Not an ebay item, but the "USB Infrared Toy v2" works great for me. Documentation is good and the device very reliable. http://dangerousprototypes.com/docs/USB_Infrared_Toy

I ended up in a situation with no IR receiver on a front end and the Hauppauge remote has high WAF.

Do these support any programming? My previous microsoft branded MCE
remote is about to die and it has two programmable-learning power
buttons (so I can turn the tv on-off and run all of myth with the
single remote). I'm having a hell of time replacing it.

For that I'm using a master/slave extension lead. This way my speaker
system gets switched off too with a single button. Or get yourself a
Logitech Harmony.

I have one, and it doesn't support programming.

I know they're popular around here, but I find the Harmony remotes
quite terrible.

I am also not a Harmony fan, but to most it is the only option for a real
all-in-one. I use JP1 for a cheap alternative to Harmony. It takes a
little work to get it programmed and find all the appropriate codes, but
that is the fun of it and I love it. I use URC-8820N and URC-10820N
remotes with XBox Remote IR receivers. I got the remotes for under $4 each
at Sears Outlet and the receivers for under $3 each on eBay. You need to
convert the receiver connector to USB or you can get adapter cables off
eBay.

I was unimpressed too
(<URL:http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv/users/363307#363307>);
the buttons are way too small. The MX-650 or MX-850 would be my choice
today

Re: Cheap USB IR receivers on ebay [In reply to]

I got one of these:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/USB-PC-Remote-Control-Wireless-Mouse-keyboard-MCE-Win-7-Vista-USB-IR-Receive-/221019307524?pt=US_Remote_Controls_Pointers&hash=item3375c6fe04#ht_2264wt_982

It worked out of the box as a usbhid device (keyboard/mouse), no lircd
configuration required. I just used the keybinding editor in mythfrontend
to customize the buttons.

However, I was disappointed that the IR range was limited on it, maybe 6
feet, which wasn't enough to reach my couch. Also the buttons don't feel
right and you have to apply more force to push the buttons than what I am
used to. However, I lived with the mini mac 6 button remote for a few
months, so having the extra buttons feel so luxurious.

Oh hindsight, i should have done more research and spend more $$$ on a
quality remote.
