Exporting Recordings to Videos

Hi to all

For years I have used mythnuv2mkv to transcode recordings that I want to
keep for ever and have available in a medium size (< 1GB for a 1.5 h
movie) avi file. I used to separate the resulting files from recordings
and stored them in genre-specific subfolders for Mythvideo.

mythnuv2mkv has stopped to work under Mythbuntu 12.04 (with Mythtv
0.25-fixes). I seems still to work with movies that don't have
a cutlist for commercial breaks. If there is a cutlist cutting more than
the beginning and the end of a file, the transcoding process stops at
the first break.

So I'm looking for another method.

MythVidexport is a mystery to me. I works alright but doesn't honor
cutlists and there is no way to shrink the filesize. I have read a
statement by Raymond Wagner, the author, that mythvidexport expects you
to have done all transcoding stuff before you run mythvidexport. This
means that you have to run at least two user-jobs to get what you want:
mythtranscode and mythvidexport. Inconvenient compared to mythnuv2mkv.
Further, mythtranscode results in a file ending with mpg.tmp which is
not used by mythvidexport. So one has to replace the original mpg-file
with the mpg.tmp-file created by mythtranscode.

There is the additional problem that I don't find the configuration
settings for mythtranscode profiles in Mythbuntu. Sorry, but I have
searched for half an hour without success. Where do I find it?

Is there really no easy way to do the following:

1. create a cutlist from a recording (manually)
2. start a user-job which reduces the file-size and exports the result
to mythvideo

Thanks for hints,

Sven

Erm... that only happens when mythtranscode fails.

My preference is to use mythtranscode in fifo mode, running the output into ffmpeg. There's a script on the mythtranscode wiki page.

That script was be nice, would it not bring video and audio completely
out of sync. I'm using a freshly compiled ffmpeg from git.

The version that comes with Mythbuntu 12.04 was continually interrupted
with this error: "Floating point exception(core dumped)".

The ffmpeg from git runs smoothly but brings audio out of sync by
several seconds. I attach the stdout log of a test recording of a few
seconds. The result is out of sync by about half a second. I called the
script from the mythtranscode wiki makevideo.sh. I have changed only the
path of the ffmpeg binary to /usr/local/bin.

Maybe someone can see the problem. I don't.

Thanks,

Sven

Hm, seems so. I'm running into a bug that was seen before on this list
but the poster never got a reply:
http://www.mythtv.org/pipermail/mythtv-users/2012-April/331351.html

My output is looking exactly the same.

First I was running into the trap that seems to confuse myth-beginners
since generations: setting profiles for mythtranscode means you have to
change something in the backend, because the standard settings of
mythtranscode don't work (or are not recognized by the database).

I left the default profiles in mythbuntu just as they were except
switching from RTJpeg to MPEG4 and set the sample rate to 48000. The
default sample rate of 32000 is complained about in the log as not being
allowed.

Someone should really change these two default settings to working and
recognized profiles before shipping mythtv.

Now, that everything is set, I get the attached output. The original
recording is left untouched and a new file *.mpg.tmp appears.

Thanks

Sven

Could be because you have an empty cut list. I've never tried it like that myself. Usually my transcodes are in perfect sync, although I have had just one or two that were miles out. The out of sync ones were always with SD recordings, never HD.

Sven, I was trying to suggest that it might be worth trying the fifo-mode script again, but with a non-empty cut list.

No, that was not the reason. I've just finished a new run of the script
with a brand new recording and a cutlist. It's out of sync again. It
must have to do with my setup. I guess that ffmpeg is not working
properly. I will make some tests with ffmpeg alone.

Greetings,

Sven

I'd bet it was mythtranscode having problems with your particular
recordings. With no change in ffmpeg version, I've had perfect sync
with all h264 recordings and the odd wildly wrong bad sync with
a few mpeg recordings. Although of course possible, I doubt that
it was ffmpeg that was at fault.

Cheers,
Paul.
