Hardware Setup Suggestions

Hey everyone,

I'm new to mythtv and htpc's. I used to fool around with carpc's a lot
back in the day and come from a tech background as well. Just looking to
get some suggestions on my proposed hardware setup for a backend server and
some frontends.

I am planning a mythtv backend server that will also be used as a file
server and backup server using amahi home server, as well as some home
automation stuff with homeseer 3 (when it is released). I will also be
adding two front ends, one in my living room, and one in my bedroom. I
will be adding more frontends later, but for my initial setup I will start
with two. Here is what I have come up with so far.

With USB thumb drives so cheap, it may not be worth the effort to
netboot (especially if your FEs have differing hardware and can't
share a base root fs). I currently netboot myself, but next time I
upgrade my FE I'll probably just throw a 4 or 8GB stick in it and call
it good.

yea, I've always found netbooting to be more pain than it's worth. you
can also get a cheap 30-60GB SSD.

I concur with other assessments of netbooting... adds additional complexity
and may make things harder to maintain/troubleshoot.

I'm also not so sure that is a good case. It is supposed to be very loud,
and while you could replace the fans with something quieter, or run them at
5V... but still the case is not very well made from what I have read. And
it uses a proprietary power supply, which, if not built better than the
case, may make things difficult for you down the road.

If it were me, I'd spend a little more on the cases, and use a cheaper
processor... VDPAU is going to do all the heavy lifting, no need for for
anything powerful (oh and that processor doesn't include a heatsink at that
price). I'd wager that the $40 Sempron in retail box (
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103888) would do
just fine, and it's only a 45W processor, so likely use less power and
generate less heat. With the $20 savings (cpu and cooler) you could get a
better case; this is a classic favorite:
http://www.amazon.com/Antec-NSK2480-Microatx-Desktop-2x120mm/dp/B005J5VJXI/ref=sr_1_46?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1342934842&sr=1-46
and
you can get it for under $60 after shipping from someone there on amazon.

Actually if it were me, I'd spend even more on the cases and get something
like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811112222 and
a good power supply. They are the only two parts you might use for 10
years, may as well buy ones that make you happy and will last.

Good luck.

Hardware Setup Suggestions [In reply to]

I am looking at motherboards for a mythtv front end (version 0.25).:

Zotac IONITX-P-E (fan on the CPU)
CPU: Intel SU2300 @ 1.20GHz, passmark rating 912
Graphics: NVIDIA ION, 16 stream processors

Zotac IONITX-T-U (fanless)
CPU: Intel Atom D525 1.8GHz Dual-Core, passmark rating 715
Graphics: Next-Generation NVIDIA ION 512MB DDR3 video memory, 16
stream processors

This is to go in a bedroom so I would prefer fanless. I am planning on
mounting it on the back of the TV in a fairly open arrangement.

Any advice on whether the CPU speed on the fanless version is likely
to be a pain?

Any other options that will keep the overall cost under a few hundred $?

Thanks, Doug

Providing vdpau can decode ALL of your HD video, it should be fine. If
you need to rely on the CPU for the odd HD video, you will run into
trouble. The CPU should do pretty well all your SD video (although
vdpau will do most of it too).

Thanks Nick,

Can I get the backend to transcode any files to a suitable format for
vdpau? I'm rather new to myth.

I use the version of this case with the LCD screen for our living room
frontend (which has an Athlon x2 4200+ and a GT430 video card with a
small, quiet fan). It is very quiet, though I am using the stock cpu
fan and a standard antec power supply, both of which, upon close
inspection make all the noise, and quieter versions would make it even
more silent.

if you want to go retro:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811204039
which looks adorable and has quiet good reviews.

many people have also mentioned this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16856173019
which apparently handles 60hz Advanced 2x(?). I have two ion systems
in two bedrooms here that work decently fine, though things that
require actual CPU speed like MythMusic and a large program guide, are
noticeably slower than on my 4200+.

what will you be decoding? vdpau works for *most* common formats

I have four ION systems used as frontends (two at my house, two at my
parents) that work great for MythTV.

yea, I've always found netbooting to be more pain than it's worth. you

Thanks for the suggestions. I will look into picking up a few 16gb flash
drives for the install instead of network booting.

That antec case looks great and it fits right into my budget. I was also
looking into the other case options from antec. They have some really nice
HTPC cases. Might have to rethink my build now. May go with a combined
backend/frontend in my living room. The money I will save by not having a
separate frontend in the living room, I can splurge for a nicer case and
more storage.

The main use will be watching recorded DVB-T (Australia) and playing
music from the back end. As I'm new to MythTV I'm not sure what other
things we'll want to use it for. But as I'm going for a minimalist and
silent system with high WAF I'm wary of specification creep.

What is it in MythMusic that is demanding on the CPU? Is it decoding
the format (I am currently storing my music in FLAC)? I gather
MythMusic is a plugin for pre v0.25. I'm using v0.25.

By the way, I'm not sure of the etiquette but I realize I have added a
branch in Bobby's original closely related question - this is my first
post to any forum. I hope the issues are sufficiently closely related.

mythmusic in 0.25 uses a lot of memory cpu in managing the music
trees, (or some such), on my setup it's much slower than in 0.24,
especially so on my ION systems.
