HELP! 64bit Mythbuntu spontaneously reboots (32bit didn't)

Hi,

I recently re-installed Mythbuntu 12.04 64bit on a machine that was running
Mythbuntu 11.10 32-bit PAE (without this issue)

Everything seems to be working - it records, plays back, does everything OK
- except that sometimes the box reboots itself?!

There doesn't seem to be any particular trigger that I can work out - last
night it crashed while recording as soon as I stopped watching something.
It also looks like it crashed overnight while recording, but not playing
anything. Of course it's also been up for sometimes two days without a hitch.

I'm not really sure what to do here. I am using the Mythbuntu installed
nVidia blob driver, and I have tried changing this to the driver with
updates rather than the non-updated driver. This hasn't made any difference
to stability - I mention it only because previously I used the nVidia driver
installed manually (rather than the Ubuntu package).

Typically I would believe this was caused by bad RAM or suchlike - but that
seems a stretch given the 32bit OS never exhibited any stability problems at
all.

So - I really don't know what to do! The WAF is plummeting (if the
Tour-de-france highlights weren't repeated a few hours after the
crash-mid-schedule I would have really been in the dog house.)

Please, I would like some help getting to the bottom of this.

Could it be the drivers for the two SAA7146 DVB cards?
Maybe the RAM has coincidentally come loose? (I will check this today.)

Any sage advice much appreciated.

thanks,
-kt

Yeah, I'm 100% sure it's not just X - I saw the BIOS boot screen come up,
and the uptime is back to a few hours (or so) when I don't.

Auto-install updates is turned off (according to
/etc/apt/apt.conf.d/50unattended-upgrades)

Re: HELP! 64bit Mythbuntu spontaneously reboots (32bit didn't) [In reply to]

without a kernel backtrace of what's likely to be a kernel panic, it
will be pretty hard to know why it's rebooting

This used to happen on one of my box with a 9400M nvidia chipset.

Do you have another linux box running ?
Set netconsole on the machine that crash and listen to it on the remote machine.

Something like this:
http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/linux-netconsole-log-management-tutorial.html

Now the bad news is that if it's actually a kernel crash, probably
none of us here will be able to do anything about it ...

I don't know if it applies to your case, but I used to have reboots (on opensuse 11.4) on Athlon II, x86_64 while I was using EIT on a DVB-S mantis card. I disabled it since I don't use it (I added a disecq switch and the card is not usable since) and I didn't have a single reboot since.

I doubt this is your problem but have you tried wiggling the power
cables in the case to see if there's a bad connection? I just finished
building my system, case and all, and had a similar problem to you. The
box would just suddenly reset for no apparent reason. I eventually
tracked it down to a very slightly loose connection on the power cable
to the motherboard. Pin 14 (the green wire) is normally shorted by the
motherboard to ground to tell the power supply to turn on and provide
full power. Because the connection on this wire was a bit loose, it
would stop being shorted to ground and the power supply would turn off.
Invariably it turned back on again immediately (no idea why) making it
look more like a reset than power down. After I squeezed the connector
a bit, the problem went away.

As I say, if you haven't touched the hardware, only the software,
there's no reason why you should suddenly have this problem but if all
else fails, it may be worth checking.

I was using the mythbox yesterday, and I saw reboots twice - both times I
had just edited a cutlist, and selected "Save and Exit".

Since I have an NVidia card, and have configured myth to use VDPAU, is there
some VDPAUness going on during the end of the cut-list editing process?

I did replace 2 hard disks when I re-installed. So maybe something became
loose.
I've just checked the plug connections, pulled, clean && re-seated the RAM,
vacuumed the dust off all the filters & fans...

Fingers crossed that was it.

thanks for the help,

Hello again,

I think I've determined the culprit - sort of.

It wasn't the power supply... $200 wasted.

I used to run xscreensaver with the opengl photo-panning applette.
I was sitting around cogitating, watching the screensaver pan over a photo,
and the box rebooted.
I checked the schedule - it wasn't recording at the time.

So I disabled xscreensaver - and thereby "fixed" the reboots.

It's now been up for nearly 48 hours, which hasn't happened for weeks - it
got to the stage where it would last 2-3 hours at most.

So of xscreensaver is causing the box to reboot (As JWZ says, there is
nothing in xscreensaver that should cause a problem with X, (let alone a
reboot)) - this means it's probably the nVidia blob right?

I'm using a motherboard with an on-board nvidia 9400 GPU. The drivers are
the Ubuntu module shipped ones "+updates".

Maybe I should change to the latest manual nVidia drivers ?

What do you think ?

thanks,
-kt

I doubt the nVidia blob is the issue (might be, check the nVidia forums
for the issue), unless you just updated it and then the problem started.

CLEAN YOUR CPU HEATSINK - Make sure CPU fan(s)/airflow are good.

I had a box doing something similar. I replaced the power supply, and was
pulling my hair out trying to figure out why it was randomly rebooting.
I installed the sensors package to monitor CPU temps and found it was
overheating (getting to the ACPI BIOS critical temp).

My symptoms: seemingly random shutdowns/reboots with a decreasing time
between them. Didn't seem to matter if I was watching a show or the
backend was idle. I later found it would reboot during a CPU intensive
application (transcoding for instance) every time.

I also noticed the "upgrade" from Ubuntu 11 to 12 revived my automatic
shutdown command for myth backend so the backend would shutdown after
the timeout - I had disabled that (at least I thought I had) before the
upgrade. After cleaning the CPU heatsink and disabling the auto backend
idle shutdown the box has been rock solid.

I have seen this several times and the problem was that the small
capacitors surrounding the CPU were dying.

If the tops of the aluminum cans are even starting to pop up
( they should be slightly depressed ) or if there is any sign of
leakage they are on their way out.

If you have a choice, such as when buying a new motherboard,
always go for the solid caps.

Just a follow-up on this -

I found an identical motherboard, and some RAM to re-test this.
I had already replaced the PSU, to no effect (except to the wallet).

With the new motherboard, and the new or existing RAM - exactly the same

So I removed the nvidia blob supplied with Ubuntu, and installed from the
nVidia supplied driver.
This did lead to a change: instead of simply rebooting, now it gets GUI
lockups. Killing X etc. has no effect, but the backend seems to be running
OK. I could ssh in and reboot it.

Just now it hard-locked everything during some TV playback, with a repeating
audio loop (about 1 second long, very weird).
Running an xscreensaver GL based hack seems to cause the problem within an
hour or so, or otherwise longer. This time I had "chmod -x" xscreensaver
before reboot, so that was out of the equation too.

That leaves only the CPU and two DVB cards that have not been swapped out.

I was under the impression CPU's didn't break?
I re-did the thermal paste when I swapped the motherboard; but I also
checked the thermals before, and it was all fine (about 45C IIRC).

Any further advice?

Ditch the DVB cards for a while and test ?

cheers,
-kt

I can't give advice, but I can say that I've had pretty much all those
symptoms over the past 6 months on my Zotac Atom/Ion FE. I'd had the freeze
with repeated audio loop occasionally for years and suspected ALSA.
Eventually I upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04 so I could upgrade from 0.24 to
0.25. Then I moved from diskless to a new 12.04 install on an SSD. All
32-bit. My BE is still on 10.04.

Somewhere along that route, stability hit a horrific low. Frequent reboots
and freezes of many different kinds. The kids practically stopped watching
TV, so it had its benefits. But after some extended troubleshooting, I
finally saw a RAM test that failed. While replacing the RAM, a tiny 8mm
long sliver of metal (a shaving from the case?) appeared that had been
lodged on the motherboard under the RAM sockets. Anyway, this exercise
solved the random reboots and some of the freezes.

The remaining FE freezes were fixed by correcting a pm-utils bug (see my
recent thread on that). My FE now seems to be very stable...

Other stuff I've hit along the way:

1. The original nvidia drivers in 12.04 can cause xorg to crash. I now use
the x-swat PPA version.

2. I read reports of random reboots with the 3.2 kernel which were fixed in
3.4. I tried installing a 3.4 kernel, but it made no different for me so I
reverted.

3. As well as the pm-utils issue I mentioned, I've previously had other
problems that only happen after suspend/resume, but not after a reboot.

FWIW, the only significant problems I've experienced that haven't had clues
in the logs have been hardware or nvidia driver issues.

One last thing I tried whilst troubleshooting my problems; disabling
ACPI in the kernel boot options. Not necessarily a solution in its own
right, but it did help me figure out that one of my issues only
happened after resume.

Just to confirm this, I too have a first gen Nvidia ion atom comb and I
have suffered the same symptoms as David.
System stability was hopeless on recent Ubuntu kernels.
Ubuntu 11.10 with Nvidia 295.20 was stable.
Then useless until 12.04.1 kernel 3.2.0-29 with nvidia 295.49 .
The issues were video hang, last audio block looping.
Kernel 3.2.0-30 is not stable, I have not tried 31.
It makes no difference whether 32 or 64 bit kernels are used.
I am sticking with 3.2.0-29 nvidia 295.49.

So ... more than six months later, I can finally revel the culprit was ...
THE C-P-U !!! <shocked gasp from the crowd />

I bought a new DVB card, and had thus replaced *everything* in the box
except the CPU. The lock-ups & reboots persisted.

Still not wanting to believe it to be true, I only bought a $40 2nd-hand
core2-duo, replacing my core2-quad.

Lots of problems went away.
Crashes (although it's only been 12 hours, so maybe I'm being too
optimistic).
Transcoding didn't work properly either - it missed cut points etc.
Running a high-end open-gl screensaver (it shows my photo album while
idle) used to lock it up

I still need to do some more testing, but *fingers crossed*, it's all fixed
with the CPU.

Are CPU's repairable ?

I wonder if it's still under warranty ? Don't think I have the receipt.

cheers,
-kt

Nope, not repairable.

While you may have a bad CPU, it could be something else altogether. You
might not have had good thermal conductivity with the heatsink, may not
have had a good seat in the socket, may have outdated firmware.
Additionally, you might be able to get away with under-clocking, disabling
a core, increasing voltages, etc. Finally, I have seen similar issues
caused by a power supply, or the motherboard's power circuits/.

While the two chips you compared are similar in many ways... they may be
very different in terms of the demands they place on other components in
the system... in order to have any assurance that it's the CPU, you would
need to do an apples to apples comparison and replace it with an identical
CPU.

For the most part: true!

But I also replaced the motherboard (I had an identical spare) which
involved re-seating the CPU, and re-thermal-pasting
Also I recorded the thermals, it was all nominal.

The big problem is I was tired of dicking-around with it, and wanted it to
Just Work (TM). Now it does :D

You don't realise how much you depend on MythTV working.
Ok so the kids wont go hungry if it doesn't perform, but it makes life just
that little bit nicer.

thanks for the suggestions,
