Most stable way to get video from DCT-6200

Hi,

When I ran .24 fixes (MythBuntu 11.10), I used 2 HDPVRs and spdif to get video from mt DCT-6200's. When I upgraded to .25 fixes (mythbuntu 12.04), I started getting mythbackend lockups and crashes, all related to the HDPVR's.

So, I switched to Firewire, which came with it's own set of problems: audio decoding errors, video skip.

What is the most stable and future proof way to get HD video and AC3 audio from my DCT-6200 into MythTV. I thought I had that with the HDPVRs, but apparently not.

Gerald

ps: Firewire MPEG-2 is better HD than HDPVR h.264, which softens the edges (less crisp video)

Any suggestions I can start looking at? Is anyone else having issues with dual HDPVR's on one backend?

I run two HD-PVR's on one backend. It works well 99% of the time. Every
once in a while, I get a failed recording and have to power-cycle the
HD-PVR before it will work again (I believe this is a well-known HD-PVR
issue). I did arrange my USB ports so that the two HD-PVR devices are on
separate controllers.

Hi Greg,

Yeah, my setup under .24 was really stable as well. Under .25, I got crashes and lockups just by changing channels (via firewire).

I'll do more testing on the weekend, I guess.

Use Cable Card if you can!

I have never gotten firewire to work reliably on the STB's I get from
Comcast. It works well for channel changing, but recording was always
hit or miss, and lots of channels I want are encrypted. So I had to
resort to HD-PVR. My understanding from reading a number of firewire
threads on this list is that it is somewhat hit or miss; it may well
depend on which STB you have, which firewire chip you have,
kernel/driver version, etc. Some people report it as rock solid, others
like me can't really get it to work at all.

Sadly, Canada, so not an option.

I have had good success with Firewire, once I solved the "No Input
Received in 100 msecs" problem. Is it possible that you have a bad cable
connection? That may cause your firewire issues as well as your HD PVR
problems. What type of firewire problems do you have? You mention audio
and video errors. How bad are they? Do you have failed recordings?

Personally I would use Firewire for channels that are not copy
restricted and HD PVR for those that are.

I got the same kind of problem with my dct-6200 , getting video + channel
change on through firewire connection. Under .24 everything was working
reliable, all channel were working (SD/HD), but I need to run a firewire
primer script at every channel change but was working so good. When I
upgraded to .25 (mythbuntu 12.04 - fresh install), my priming script is
causing more problem than without using it. In fact, without any script
video capture is working and recording as well. My problem is when I'm
watching livetv, if I change channel twice in a row (I'm fine if I stop
then go back to main menu and start again), frontend get disconnected from
backend then reconnect most of the time , if I'm lucky. So I went back to
0.24 / Mythbuntu 11.10. Any ideas fixing those kind of issues ?
