Shows being titled as "Season" in mythvideo

All,

I have been trying to sort out some missing metadata information in my
video/DVD/etc collection and have found an odd occurrence.

My video series are named in the following folder structure:

Title/Season/01.Pilot

....for example

But when scanning for changes, Myth is setting the title of things to
"Season" rather than the title.

I have moved these videos out of the folder structure completely,
re-scanned and then put them back and scanned again, but this has not
changed anything, all the titles of the shows are "Season".

This has not happened with everything though, some have all the correct
titles and metadata, I can't see any correlation.

Here is a log excerpt which shows the problem, I am running latest
0.25-fixes as of last weekend. Note the top level directory, "Series" is
just the folder that contains series videos, I have another called films
for example. I have tried moving "The Big Bang Theory" to the top level
and scanning again, but that made no difference.

Cheers

Martin

What happens if you change those episode names to:

01 Pilot.mp4
02 The Big Bran Hypothesis.mp4
03 The Fuzzy Boots Corollary.mp4

and such (i.e. change the "." between episode number and subtitle to a
space), as on http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/MythVideo_File_Parsing ?

Note that you can do this easily for all of them with a simple rename
command (using either the util-linux-ng (
http://linux.die.net/man/1/rename ) or the Perl version (
http://search.cpan.org/~pederst/rename-1.8/bin/rename.PL ) of the rename
command).

Thanks Mike,

I had thought of that, seeing that was the supported naming convention on
the wiki, but figured as it worked for most things, the "." must be parsed
OK.

I have just tried this though, removed the folder, ran a scan, renamed the
episodes to remove the ".", put them back and scanned again.

Got the exact same output in the logs however, just without the "." in the
file names.

As an experiment, I took out another folder, Band of Brothers, did a scan,
then put it back and scanned again. It was all perfect previously, but
after this process, it is now named as the others are, with "Season" as the
title.

So it appears the correlation is the time the metadata was pulled for these
shows, new ones I have put in are getting the bum info, ones that already
had the info are fine.

The only major thing I did change was to move all of my media onto an extra
2TB HDD I installed, then change the storage directory to
"/media/media/Videos", this is the folder where "Series" and "Films"
resides, possibly related, but not sure how.

Thanks

Martin

Hi all,

Has anyone recently added any series to MythVideo and had the info populate
like this? Or has anyone had everything work correctly? I assume it must
be something with my system, as it hasn't been mentioned by anyone else on
the list.

I have been experimenting with moving the folder of video to different
locations and re-scanning, root folder, the films folder, but every time it
gets titled as "Season".

I also tried creating a new folder (located on the system HDD), added that
as a storage directory and then put the series in there, but the same thing
happened.

Finally, I tried a different naming method:

The Big Bang Theory > The Big Bang Theory Season 1 > 01, 02, 03 etc etc etc

But when running a new scan, myth titled the files as "The Big Bang Theory
Season", so it seems that whatever the folder name about the video files is
how they are titled.

Lastly, I tried taking a directory level out, so it was just:

The Big Bang Theory Season 1 > 01, 02, 03 etc etc etc

But this made no difference!

If there is anything I can provide to help get to the bottom of this.

If anyone else can try re-adding something to there MythVideo (re-scanning
after moving the folder out and then again after putting them back, to
remove the DB entry), that would be great.

Cheers

Martin

Can't answer your question, but I've settled on:

The Big Bang Theory > Series 1 > S01E01 The Big Bran Hypothesis.mkv

I haven't tried recently, but it worked all the way through the 0.25
development cycle.

Sorry, that's not quite right - for best reliability, I actually use:

The Big Bang Theory > Series 1 > The Big Bang Theory S01E01 The Big Bran
Hypothesis.mkv

I think the trick is having all the data in the filename, and just having
the folders around for the sake of us humans.

Thanks Chris and Thomas.

I have tried this and yes, it does work as expected.

But does this mean the supported naming conventions have changed along the
line somewhere? This started happening when I was on 0.24-fixes. My media
has always been named this way and lookup worked when I first got my new
HDD (end of Oct 2011) and put all my media in one place on the new drive.
It is named in accordance to the examples on the wiki, so *should* work OK.

If you guys do happen to be dumping any new media in and can try my way of
naming to see what happens, that would be appreciated.

Cheers

The regular expression and process used to parse and support those
naming conventions has not changed significantly in two and a half
years. Aside from one minor fix (dab53474) to support 4-digit seasons
(seasons ordered by years rather than numerically) prior to the 0.24
release, the routines are the same as they were in 0.23 (016709e1).
When literally nothing has changed, the only potential cause I can think
of is a change in Qt's regular expression processing.

hmm, odd. Tried from my other frontend also, same result (I assume this is
a frontend function anyway?!).

user [at] MYTHTV:~$ mythutil --version
Please attach all output as a file in bug reports.
MythTV Version : v0.25-61-gd064338
MythTV Branch : fixes/0.25
Network Protocol : 72
Library API : 0.25.20120408-1
QT Version : 4.7.4

Tried that parse-video-filename command you used above, is that new?
Doesn't seem to exists here. But I noticed something at the end of the
output:

2012-05-03 17:10:24.432835 I Assumed character encoding: en_GB.UTF-8
2012-05-03 17:10:24.433374 N Empty LocalHostName.

2012-05-03 17:10:24.452961 N Reading locale defaults from
/usr/share/mythtv//locales/en_gb.xml

The emtpy LocalHostName caught my eye, pretty sure this is all in place in
mythtv-setup, got a recording running at the moment, so can't check. DOn't
know if this would cause any issues.

I have just upgraded, but doesn't look like it has built since this commit,
so will update again at the weekend and try again.

Or your locale settings are incorrect or using some word for "Season"
that's not "Season"--like maybe your locale's translation files say to
use "Series".

I just renamed one of the "Seasons" to "Series" and it added the data
correctly, as expected.

But, I am still confused as to why it used to work, with no apparent change
to make it stop recognising "Season" as a correct term.

I checked the settings in the frontend, everything is set to English UK, as
I think it always has been. Could OS language settings effect this also?
Will take a look at that over the weekend, but again, doubt I have messed
with anything there.

Anyway, thank you, I have an easier way forward now, re-naming folders to
Series isn't a major problem.

I'll try changing to US settings, I guess Season is more a US term?

Cheers

Correct. Season/Episode are the terms commonly used in the
US by the networks/production companies. Series usually
refers to the entire run. (You had the entire Firefly Series, which
had only one Season, with 14 episodes (only 11 aired on Fox,
and not in the right order). Of course, for every common usage,
there are exceptions.

Perhaps 0.24 and below didn't use the translated version of "Season" and
"Episode" or maybe the UK translation team just added the translation
for 0.25 or ???

The term "Season" was indeed translated into "Series" by the English GB
translator.

I could be wrong but I think the code that handles that changed between
0.24 and 0.25...

That would most likely work and so would using English CA (Canadian
English sometimes follows the British rules and sometimes the American
ones...). Season -> Season in both...

> Perhaps 0.24 and below didn't use the translated version of "Season" and
> "Episode" or maybe the UK translation team just added the translation

Some of this code was most likely changed when (or after) MythVideo was
merged into core so its difficult to say.

Translators normally expect the strings they translate to be used for
display only and not for parsing so a "translator comment" (and/or a
disambiguation string if the context it is in stays QObject) should have
been placed/used there to let them know this is used for parsing and not
(only) for display. It's difficult to say whether "Season" would have
been translated into "Series" by the translator but at least he would
have been aware of the impact of doing it which he wasn't when he
translated this string.

It's quite possible that we could use the same trick that was used for
RatingToPL and let translators provide more than one word that for
"Season".

Is "Series" always equivalent to "Season" in British English?

Have a nice day!

Nick

PS: I'm sending a copy of this email to the British English translator.

I see it a lot over at metabroadcast. (who run the uk guide feed)
see e.g. http://atlas.metabroadcast.com/#reference_dataModel

They use series/episode to describe the position of a programme within
the brand. (what gets called season/episode in the US)

But the british also have the "series link" concept which allows to
record whole series, but this time it appears to mean "all episodes
that belong together".

I don't see any circumstance where the words are not interchangeable as far
as myth goes. As Gary said, Series generally refers to the whole show,
including all of it's Seasons

Thanks, appreciated.

Now we know what the issue is, it is easy enough to do some re-naming.
Others may get caught out though in the UK, so adding Season and Series in
the translation may avert any problems. But admittedly I have no idea how
hard or how much or a "bodge" doing that is.

Thanks for all the replies to this issue

But in the context we use "series" (which is the one you described
above) it looks like considering both equivalent would be OK.

oops, that "that" didn't belong there...

OK

I was somewhat surprised to see that the term "Series" is sometimes (but
not always) used for British TV series sold outside the UK (Doctor Who
(not in the US but in Canada), All creatures great and small, Red Dwarf
(in Canada), etc...) so it looks like the issue should be fixed there as
well...

No problem...

For 0.25-fixes in order to avoid breaking the season matching for every
translation I would do a small temporary fix and put the real fix in
master (development code).

I don't currently have any videos so I had to fake some but I tested a
small fix which seems to work relatively well. Would you be willing to
test it before it is applied to (most likely) the British English, the
Canadian English and possibly the US English translation?

Have a nice day!

Great news, thanks for looking at this

Sure, happy to help with testing this, just let me know what to do. Have

Interesting to see how this affects en_NZ

Where are the translation files in the git source?

That's actually not that surprising since there are only (-; three
English translation files

- English US (since the application is in US English this is essentially
used to correctly handle plurals).

- English GB (British English).

- English CA (Canadian English).

and you are most likely using English GB since it's most likely the one
closest to New Zealand English.

We don't have any locale files for en_NZ to setup things like this so
this is a choice you made when when you initially setted up your MythTV
(most likely quite a while ago...)

Under the i18n directories in the mythtv and each of the plugins
folders. They must be maintained (and "recompiled") using the Qt tools.

Have a nice day!
