MythTV 0.24-1.80 - No sound on HD TV recording

MythTV 0.24-1.80 - No sound on HD TV recording

I recorded 'The Italian Job' from ITV HD the other day and when I play
it there's sound from the TV broadcast prior to the movie but as soon as
it starts there's no sound what so ever. This despite my AV amp
(connected to the mythbox by HDMI) showing it's receiving 5.1 sound but
no sound out of the speakers. All other HD TV recordings playback sound
in the appropriate number of channels. Any thoughts as to what's gone
wrong? Setting or un-setting Dolby, DTS etc in mythfrontend makes no
difference. The TV decoder is a PC nano Stick 290e which has worked
without fault.

vlc hung up when asked to play my recording but was fine after I chopped
off the beginning. There isn't any sound anyway until the initial pan
down gets to the viaduct.

ffmpeg -i on the chopped file says:

Upgrade your copy of mythtv.
Somes fixes for AAC audio went in since your copy was made.

More updates are in fixes/0.25 too that fixes all known AAC issues

upgrade to 0.25 just yet; there seems a lot of issues with it and it's
taken me some time to get 0.24 working on my h/w setup. Is there a
backport of the AAC audio updates to 0.24 or some such?

Attached is a snip of the mythtvfrontend log which looks like the
problem. Log is around the time of playing back the recorded
programme. The problem looks around the time between 2012-04-25
14:51:39.329 and 2012-04-25 14:52:14.224.

This looks about the time the audio on the play-in from the recording is
ok and when the movie starts the audio stops.

2012-04-25 14:51:39.161 TV: Changing from None to WatchingPreRecorded
2012-04-25 14:51:39.311 ScreenSaverX11Private: DPMS Deactivated 1
2012-04-25 14:51:39.329 VDPAU: Added 2 output surfaces (total 4, max 4)

2012-04-25 14:52:14.224 AFD Error: Unknown audio decoding error

If this is a known AAC problem that is solved in 0.25 then I can wait
till I upgrade to 0.25 before watching the movie, after all it's a
timeless classic.

I doubt it will cleanly apply to 0.24
but here is the relevant changeset

This is an entirely different problem alltogether...

it *may* be fixed in 0.25 thanks to the ffmpeg update.

however, it's not guaranteed.

you'll need to provide a sample of the file with the segment that
contains an issue.

I think the usual way of chopping bits out of a video is to use dd;
something like this:

dd if=/path/to/original.mpg of=sample.mpg bs=1M count=100

You can adjust --skip and --count to locate the bits you want. I'm
playing with a keyframe-linked cutter similar to mythcutprojectx that
should work with HD and a myth cutlist but it still needs more tlc.

I don't use HD often but I haven't noticed this problem in 0.24.3. OTOH
I would have recorded with 0.25 and then rsynced to 0.24, so maybe the
difficult bits had already been cut.

Problem Audio on Freeview HD BBC Channels. As soon as the audio
configuration change, further AAC/LATM decoding will fail with decoding
error messages.

This does sound like the problem I've experienced as the play-in is
2-ch, the movie 5.1ch (well more than 2-ch anyway). I'll investigate
further. The 'chopping off' solution may be deleting all the 2-ch
section thus when the resulting file is played it is all 5.1ch, ie
doesn't contain a change.

forgot to add that the behaviour in decoding was that it kept changing
from 2 -> 6 channels, it didn't give a "decoding" error like here.
Which normally would indicate corrupted data. It may be a coincidence
and you got a reception problem at that exact moment

Does this indicate the file is corrupt? As the file is a .mpg has it
been transcoded by myth if so is it a transcoding error?
My concern now is that this might happen again on other 5.1ch movies
recorded from HD TV.

mythtv doesn't do anything to the stream received unless you configure to do so.
That the audio is still aac_latm, I would guess that no process has
been done on that file.

If a recent version of ffmpeg doesn't play that file, you got no
chance for myth to play it, nor anything other playback software for
that matter. They pretty much all use ffmpeg internally.

It could be that the file is corrupted, or that it's something broken in ffmpeg.

if it was an issue you saw with other recording it would indicate the
later, if it's a one-off, it's most certainly is the first.

Ok understood. I'll try and record another HD movie from the same
channel and see if it has the same problem, if not I guess it's a one
off error during the recording.
