Switching Audio Inputs on a Frontend

I am considering how to continue to make my AV Amplifier / Switch units
more redundant by incorporating the audio switching functionality into
myth frontends. In my case these are older units that used to switch
analogue video, but now with direct feeding of displays with VGA / HDMI
etc the V switching function has become redundant. For scope I might
want say 3 audio inputs.

Has anyone gone down this path, what cards can one use for audio inputs
with a view to switching these on the frontend, to make the audio amp
more a drone amp (and less a switch - except that controlling volume on
the amp continues to be preferable to minimise background hum / noise).

For example it seems an old pvr-150 can be used for analogue audio
still. To be clear this would be analogue audio without parallel video.

Also what would be the best software to switch the audio on the frontend?
