.25 on Gnome 3 and I hate Gnome 3........

I currently am running a couple of backends and lots of frontends on
Fedora 12/13/14 with Gnome 2 and mythtv .23 fixes.

I tried, no really, I tried and tried gnome 3 on a laptop for a month
and frankly just hated it. So my myth setup has stayed on what is now
approaching a 2 year old infrastructure environment.

gnome 3 just seems to be determined to work with a 'single task' idiom
and for power users like me that just does not work. On my laptop I
usually have vlc connections to a number of machines as well as
system/network monitoring tools running...gnome 3 does not lend itself
to this kind of setup. I'm currently trying F16 with xfce in a VM to
see whether I can get on with that.

Anyway the root of my problem is I need to upgrade my whole
infrastructure if I implement .25 so my question to the list is.....

What Desktop Environment are you using for your .25 setup, if you,
like me are a multi functioning multi tasking user how are you getting
around the problems inherent in Gnome 3?

Thanks in advance.

The 'I hate Gnome 3' theme hasn't been so prominent on the Fedora lists
recently. I don't count myself a power user, but I use KDE. Not
migrated from 0.24-fixes yet, though.

Same as John, I'm using KDE. On my front end, I'm using LXDE.

Take a look at the Cinnamon desktop- it was designed for Linux Mint,
but it's installable on several Linux distributions.

I hate the phrase "power user" but I guess I qualify as one. After
trying gnome 3 last summer, I switched all my machines to xfce. For
me xfce is much better than Kiddie Desktop Environment (KDE) or the
abominations that are gnome 3 and unity.

You may be able to save me a little time......

I'm trying xfce in a vm and there's a couple of things that I've come
across.....

Using thunar there's no way I can see to connect to a remote server
via a ssh connection the way that nautilus has a 'connect to server'
option, is this right?

Also silly things like changing a filename open a sub function box
rather then doing it in the thunar GUI directly, again is this right?

Lastly I want to use Compiz and can't seem to get emerald window
decorations working, is that right?

Thanks

I've been impressed by LXDE, which comes across as a sort of Gnome 2 lite.

Now all I have to do is get rid of that stupid Gnome 3 login screen that tells
the entire world what users I have configured on my boxes...

I use Marlin ( https://launchpad.net/marlin ) instead of Thunar.
Though it is still in development and crashes sometimes. I don't
know about any graphical 'connect to server' functionality. I always
do that sort of thing from the shell.

Also I can't help much with compiz. I just use whatever was installed
by default in xubuntu.

This is getting pretty far off topic.

I looked at the gnome desktop some time ago, and had an excursion into
Ubuntu in a virtual about 2 years ago and *hated* it.

I use kde on all my machines (except the VOIP box!).

I tried xfce on my laptop for a couple of days, but moving between xfce
and kde was bothersome, plus I couldn't find stuff so I went back to kde.

That's what I did for Ubuntu 11.10. Works much better.

Now if only they could get the workspaces figured out.

I know I originally posted this some time back but for users who
prefer the gnome2 environ I would recommend looking at Mate. I've now
got it running on some Mint boxes and have just installed it on a
Fedora 17 build, works pretty much the way Gnome2 used to and has all
the applets we love and need.

I have now moved over to linuxmint cinammon. Linuxmint mate is not believed
to be a long term project, it is a stop gap at best. I have now moved to
cinammon for my daily driver and it has annoyed me least of all Linux
desktops I have ever tried (xcfe lxde gnome 2 , gnome 3, KDE 2, 3 and 4.).

please excuse brevity and pistakes as this email was composed on a phone.

I think Mate will end up as it's own fork as there are now builds and
repos for most of the major distro's.

The install onto Fed17 took all of 5 minutes and works quite well.

Happy bunny again, lots of apps open, lot's of terminal sessions open,
lot's of work getting done.
