Pundit fan noise.

Hi,
I'm the owner of a 2.4Ghz celeron pundit box on which I'm running
mythtv (very nicely thank you). However, despite Q-Fan being enabled I
still find it noisy (the CPU/MB seem to be at 33C while the fan is
running at 1800). Granted, it's quiet compared to my other boxes but I
don't think it's really suitable to be sat in the front room next to the
TV.

Does anyone have any tips for reducing the noise level further or is
that as good as it gets ?

Cheers

RE: Pundit fan noise. [In reply to]

I have replaced the PSU in my pundit for a regular PSU and placed it
externally (Ok, it's not a super solution). I'm working on casing and
cablesleeving for it, so that will look a bit better. I use a Nexus NX-3000
PSU and i'm really pleased with it, i can barely hear it from 30cm distance.
But now i have started to hear the CPU fan and harddisk, so i'm going to
change the CPU fan aswell. I will probably change it for a Papst fan, anyway
check this site out www.silentpcreview.com.

Dunno what to say. When it's idle, my pundit's fan is barely audible in
a room with no other noise - and only enough to just hear it if it's
recording something.

Well either my hearing is really sensitive (unlikely) or I've got
something misconfigured/installed somewhere. I'll check again tonight.

Am I correct in thinking that Q-Fan only has the Enable/Disable option ?

I'll have to agree. If I'm right next to it, I can hear it running but
otherwise (TV watching distance) the thing is silent.

Not sure about the pundit, but qfan on my asus p4p800 deluxe also has a
ratio setting.

I find the range that I'm allowed to pick from very limited though I
want to have my fan run on 5v in most cases, and qfan won't go that low
by far...

maybe try without Q-Fan? I don't remember enabling it in my bios. Will
have to check with I go home, since it seems that most howto sites say
to enable it.

without Q-Fan it goes into "hoover" mode :-) I wonder if the CPU is
putting out too much heat ? Although 33C deosn't sound too hot to me.
What processors are you guys using, (mine is a 2.4 Celeron) ?

Ah, then I must have enabled it and don't remember.

I'm using a P4 2.4 (not celeron). And 33C is a fine temp - a bit on the
low end, even.

RE: Pundit fan noise. [In reply to]

Same here. My Pundit's fan is not audible at all -- unless I have it on the
bench, or when it restarts, before Q-FAN is enabled by the BIOS -- for about
a second after first startup =). You can hear it very slightly whilst its
in the cabinet, if you are *really* listening for it. If its recording? All
I hear is the hard drive going *click*, *click* every minute or so =)

The pundit's Q-FAN option has an Enable/Disable option. Most ASUS Board's
BIOSes that support Q-FAN do have a ratio, but not the Pundit. I work with
ASUS a lot, in case you can't tell =)

I have the same problem with my Pundit. Although it isn't noticable
when I am playing something with some volume. With everything off the
Pundit is very loud. I haven't enabled Q-Fan, but I guess I will take a
look at it when I get some free time.

It's not all that difficult to enable. Give it a shot sometime.

Hi, I suggest getting a Zalman fanmate. Its an adjustable CPU fan throttle
that attaches between any fan and its motherboard connection.

If you haven't enabled Q-FAN, it's not "a problem". The Pundit's fan is
supposed to be that loud -- its just how its made, etc. If you have enabled
Q-FAN and it is still that loud, at *all times*, not just sometimes, you
have a problem -- time to call ASUS =)

RE: Pundit fan noise. [In reply to]

One question

Are you running lm_sensors?

I found that the

1. machine booted... noisey for 2 secs
2. q-fan cuts in and the system goes quiet. Never gets much louder than this
during normal running
3. run sensorsd... and it seems to interact with q-fan fan goes as noisy as
it did when the machine booted

So I stopped sensorsd, don't really need the monitoring

I guess what I'm saying is that if you notice the fan getting much noiser
once it has booted then that may be your problem.

I'm running RH9.0

The other thing I did was to place the pundit behind the TV with the fan
facing the wall. Cuts the noise even more.

RE: Pundit fan noise. [In reply to]

Thanks for everyone suggestions, I've not really got to the bottom of
the issue, although clearing access to the PSU fan intake seemed to help
a bit (ide cables etc)

I think I'm probably left with have the box facing the wall :-) Maybe
I'm being over sensitive about it, Q-Fan does seem to be doing what's
meant to, it's just that I find the fan noisy in a silent room.

I might try a different CPU fan in the future. The box is still in the
"development room" for now so I've got a bit of time before I install it
in the front room.

Cheers
