Anybody Ever Tried VDR?

I'm thinking of setting up a second PVR that would directly connect to my
Satelitte dish (i.e., without having to use a seperate receiver and analog
capture card). Given that DVB support seems to still be preliminary in Myth
(also no CAM support) and that I wanted a Linux based solution, I thought I
would give VDR a try (http://www.cadsoft.de/vdr/index.htm).

Although it is very from from being as sexy as Myth is, there are tons of
plugins that can various things via a full featured DVB card (read with a HW
encoder).

Most of the users seem to be in Europe (mostly Germany) but I just thought
I'd ask around to see if anyone had anything good or bad to say about it.

Thanks!

I use a Conax CAM with MythTV...and it's working very well here (the DVB
stuff that is, my epia is another story).

Yea, that part would need some coding.

Yea, that is it, revision 2.1.

I'm not sure what birds you are going to receive, but you should know
that a lot of the north-american birds use encryption and transmission
modes not compatible with dvb. If you know that it's dvb birds and that
there is available cams, then og for the card, and try out software when
the card arrives (the drivers are really mature). If you want to have a
look at what's already available: www.satcodx.com is a good resource.

Well thanks for your help... It looks like I wouldn't be able to get much
because I wanted to get ExpressVU and was hoping to use my subbed CAM to get
the channels I pay for. Doesn't look like this would work or maybe I'm
missing something. Other options seem to include softcams but this raises
ethical questions (well, unless I only decrypt the channels I pay for) and
don't seem to be available for Myth's DVB support anyway (VDR seems to have
one but it's not listed in their "official" list of plugins)

Thanks!
