XBOX IR receiver- Homemade possible?

Is it possible to build a home made IR receiver for the xbox? It is USB based I would guess.
Has anyone done this?

Hi Bruce,

I have never heard of it. I know there are generic ones for sale
somewhere. Also, the MS version supposedly has embedded code in it. Not
sure what the point of that would be, possibly security related?

I read that the Microsoft IR receiver has memory in it to hold part of the
player program or something. Not sure if this is true or not.

The only thing contained in the receiver is a small bit of storage
containing the region code for playback though, the xbox also stores
this in the EEPROM so most likely they must match.
