strange problem.. black screen when watching live tv

sorry if this goes through twice - sent it first time before confirming mailing list subscript! (doh!) ------------------------------ hey guys.. new to the list so sorry if this is a dumb question.. I've searched the archive but can't find anything relating to this.. ok.. I've got myth installed.. used apt-get to install it and after a few dep problems (to do with apt, not myth) I got it installed.. I've run through the whole mythfilldatabase routine and the database seems to be all populated... etc etc.. When I start frontend and try to watch live tv all I get is the audio.. with a black monitor... frontend log looks as follows: ------------------------------------------------ [root[at]craig html]# mythfrontend 2003-12-15 11:08:33 Enabled verbose msgs : important general mythtv: could not connect to socket mythtv: No such file or directory Failed to create lirc socket for mythtv 2003-12-15 11:08:44 Connecting to backend server: 127.0.0.1:6543 (try 1 of 5) 2003-12-15 11:08:44 Opening OSS audio device '/dev/dsp'. player: Can't open audio device: /dev/dsp 2003-12-15 11:08:46 Using XV port 61 2003-12-15 11:08:47 Changing from None to WatchingLiveTV ------------------------------------------------ I don't know what it's talking about with the "could not connect to socket" and I don't think it's the backend because the backend is picking up... during the same session the backend log looks as follows: ------------------------------------------------ [root[at]craig root]# mythbackend Starting up as the master server. 2003-12-15 11:10:40 Enabled verbose msgs : important general 2003-12-15 11:10:42 Found changes in the todo list. 2003-12-15 11:10:57 MainServer::HandleAnnounce Playback 2003-12-15 11:10:57 adding: craig.8010.co.uk as a player 0 2003-12-15 11:10:57 MainServer::HandleAnnounce Playback 2003-12-15 11:10:57 adding: craig.8010.co.uk as a player 1 2003-12-15 11:10:57 MainServer::HandleAnnounce Playback 2003-12-15 11:10:57 adding: craig.8010.co.uk as a player 0 2003-12-15 11:10:57 MainServer::HandleAnnounce Playback 2003-12-15 11:10:57 adding: craig.8010.co.uk as a player 0 2003-12-15 11:10:57 adding: craig.8010.co.uk as a remote ringbuffer 2003-12-15 11:10:57 Changing from None to WatchingLiveTV Unknown video codec: ioctl VIDIOC_G_FMT: Invalid argument audio volume set to '65535' strange error flushing buffer ... 2003-12-15 11:11:02 Changing from WatchingLiveTV to None ------------------------------------------------ like I said I get audio so am presuming (perhaps falsely) that it's even finding the channel info correctly... so am left with this "unknown video codec".. don't know why that is happening if I type: mythtv <file> and file is some avi somewhere.. it plays just fine... so am confused about the codec issue... everything seems to work fine in other tv apps (xawtv.. experimented with other pvr software etc etc) so am hoping someone can point me in some kind of direction... My system comprises of: Matrox G450 Dual Head (am running everything on first head to be safe at this point) Athlon XP1800 AT7 Max2 MB 1Gb Ram 120Gb Drive DVD-RW CDRW Hauppage WinTV PCI (old one with BT848 chipset) etc etc hope someone can help :) TIA Craig
