WinTV 250 pvr

Hi guys,

Im getting really close to going out the door and grabbing myself one
of the WinTV 250 pvr cards - but I want to know if it will be worth it.
Here is my current setup... I have p4 2.4 ghz, running MythTV 0.13 out
through an ATI 8500 to my 57" wide screen hdtv through DVI - since the
screen is so big I need to pump up the settings to high quality
(MPeg4/8000bps), which border lines staggering video. Will getting the
250, clean up the staggering video and over all video quality that much?
Im also hooked up through the cable box so the reception isnt an
issue...
Also as a side note - I've made a very small change to the source
code that makes changing the channel (with an external application) much
cleaner and smoother - Im curious if anyone else has issues with that,
and if it would be worthwhile telling the myth-dev mailing list about
it...

Curtis

Yes. I've used a number of bttv cards, and they don't hold a candle to
the PVR-x50s and M179s. I use a 47" HDTV myself, and the difference is
extremely noticeable. Get one, you won't regret it.

Get the 250. The quality is outstanding. And since it is hardware based
encoding, it uses almost no CPU. In fact if you have an otherwise obsolete
computer laying around, you can use it with the 250 and have the backend run
on its own computer doing the recording in the basement.

My backend consists of a pvr250 in a old pentium II 400, with 256m ram and a
120g HD. Even though hauppauge recommends minimum 500mhz for Windows, this
setup under linux records flawlessly without any problem at all. The 250pvr
has brought new life to an otherwise useless computer.

Now understand, I dont transcode on this beast. If I did I would prolly get
around 4 frames/sec if I was lucky. I transcode on my AMD 1900+ (1.6GHz)
machine where I get ~25 frames/sec (2 hour movie takes about 2.5 hours).

I beleive the only difference is that the PVR-350 has coaxial out.

So what is the difference between the pvr250 and the pvr350?

Quoting Matt Snow <drama[at]slakin.net>:

False. Because it doesn't have coaxial out.

It has two things the PVR-250 does not:

TV output (NOT coaxial - It's S-video)
FM tuning capability (THIS is what the second F connector on the 350's tuner is
for.)

This is a question that has been answered a quarter of a billion times
before on this mailing list. The answer is easily obtained with a
Google search, a mailing list archive search, or a visit to the
manufacturer's web site. Please put in some due diligence and try to
find answers to things on your own before asking the list. The first
link in my signature is an excellent reference on this matter.

That said, the primary difference is basically PVR-250=mpeg2 encoder
card, PVR-350=mpeg2 encoder and decoder, along with TVOut.
