Heads up! Inexpensive GeForce 210 card at Fry's...

Hey all, just thought I'd give a heads-up to the list... I purchased a cheap
($30 with a $10 mail-in-rebate for a $20 final cost) GeForce 210 card from
Fry's over the weekend... It's not fanless, which I really wanted -- but the
fan is pretty quiet on it so I can't complain too much for $20! Your local
Fry's may or may not have any, and the sale only goes through the 11th I
believe... it's out of stock on the website so you'll have to buy it locally
if you are lucky enough to have a Fry's nearby.

http://www.frys.com/product/6046258

It fits in a single-slot and does not protrude into the next at all, which
was a requirement for me as my two 1x slots are being used by tuners. :)

This is my first forray into VDPAU, and *wow*, am I impressed! I never saw
"top" go past 5% CPU usage when playing back either 720p or 1080i
over-the-air content... and that's with my 5600+ (2.8ghz X2) idling at 1ghz
during playback.

Anyway, thought this might interest some on the list...
Best of luck...

Here is a fanless at newegg for $25 after rebate, free shipping and a free
HDMI cable:

Low Profile Ready Video Card - Retail

I looked at that one, unfortunately for my setup it was not going to work
for me. I needed a card that took up a single slot. My two x1 slots are
directly underneath my x16 slot, and both are in use with my tuners. I
would have definitely preferred a fanless solution, but that just did not
look to be an option. For the price, the one I picked up at Fry's is pretty
much perfect (for my needs).

Just be forewarned that rebates from MSI are extremely slow (mine took over
6 months) and sometimes non-existent. Check out comments on Newegg's web
site from other customers. The consensus is buy the product if you normally
would if there were no rebate. If you get something back, consider it a
present.

That's good advice for any rebate from anyone.

I refuse to purchase anything with a MIR, and I try to make sure the vendor
knows why I did not purchase. This nonsense will not stop until the sellers
realize it doesn't work.

An exception is Verizon, I got my rebate from them in a week, of course it was
in the form of a Visa debit card, that they are hoping I will leave a residual
small amount on and just forget about it.

OT OT OT

Pay down your verizon account balance using online payment with that debit
card... you can also overpay to credit your account. Helps you to burn up
that debit card the day it arrives .... I haven't checked my credit agency
to see if those cards are put onto your record and need to be canceled.

Interesting... can you get audio out through HDMI with this one?

Will this be a good upgrade from a 8200 igp or should I go straight to a GT 220?

You are supposed to be able to do that, yes, at some point. Not just
SPDIF, but full bandwidth LDPCM.

Get a GT220, it can do Advanced 2X on 1080i, the 210 is short on that
aspect.

Another exception is Staples.
I don't think that I've ever missed on any of theirs and the normal return is about a month.
Then there is TIger Direct.... don't even bother.
I can't understand why "good" vendors like Newegg would even ofter MIRs from no show companys
like MSI.. Certainly the PO factor can not help but hurt them on future business.

In my experience, Apple's rebate process was as easy as that of Staples.
