Start easy is a good plan. Pick some hardware that's supported already by
your distro. Look on the mythtv wiki for a list of hardware. Be as
standard as possible and you'll have the easiest time getting everything to
work.

Re: avertv volar ax [In reply to]

Its hard for me to search for cards actually because i'm based in Malaysia.
most cards (inside mythtv wiki) that support analogue already stops their
production (based from the feedback that i got). so, i've bought an avertv
volar ax since a malaysian's choice of analogue cards and it
supports<http://www.iway.co.nz/newsletter/4LBWNYA4GJCG/Avermedia-AVerMedia-AVerTV-Volar-HX-Supports-Linux---USB2.0-TV-Tuners-%28Digital---Analog-Terrestrial%29---PRESS-RELEASE%21.html>mythtv.
but now, after installing the firmware and all, i don't know how to
proceed.

Run mythtv-setup, and add it as a capture card. Add a video source
(with no grabber). Add an input, connecting the capture card to the
video source. Then scan for channels.

They're distributing a closed source binary driver that almost
certainly violates the GPL (direct linking and inclusion of GPL code
without redistribution under terms of the GPL).

In other words, complain to them if it doesn't work for you. It's
their problem.

So after downloading the driver file you need to unzip it and run the
installer file which is named AVERMEDIA-Linux-x64-H826D-0.10-beta.sh
(or something slightly different for the 32 bit version.)

Ok, so that means not only is it closed source and a GPL violation,
but they screwed up their installation process too.

Why are you raising your question here then? This has absolutely
nothing to do with MythTV. Their driver is broken - call them.

You did a make but you do not list doing a 'make install'.

Maybe you missed a step?

You have been playing with 2 different tuners, and it appears that one
is analog and the other is a hybrid analog/digital. And it appears that
you may have been attempting to test the digital side, by looking at the
analog device socket and possibly vice versa. (The story is long and
confusing, even in the web-site, since it is not always clear what the
hardware is *supposed* to do, so we can look for the correct results.)

The linuxtv.org wiki ( http://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/Main_Page)
has a mass of pages of background info about the 2 different standards
and how to test your card. The AVerTV does both analog and digital and
probably needs 2 drivers installed, 2 sets of firmware, and 'talks' to 2
different places in /dev. This may (or may not) be dealt with by the
installer or you may have to do things twice. A quick glance also shows
that the driver at avermedia comes in both 'X64' and 'x86' versions: are
you using the correct one? (Looks like it, as I would expect you would
not get as far as you do in the installation).

At the end of it all you need to have a h826d.ko file somewhere in your
filesystem.

At a quick glance you may have better results using the v4l drivers.

At a quick glance you'd be better using a card that has open source
gpl drivers. The proprietary ones are almost certain to fail the
moment the kernel developers change something and/or avermedia are
too lazy|stupid to fix it.

Re: avertv volar ax [In reply to]

It looks like their driver only supports up to kernel version 2.6.30. If
you're stuck using that device (you can't return it and exchange it for one
that has an open source GPL driver) you will probably need to roll back to
an older kernel. I'm not an Ubuntu person, but there should be an older
kernel in the repositories you can install. If not, you can always roll
back to Jaunty.

But their web page says it supports ubuntu 9.10, and therefore by
implication kernel 2.6.31.

Seems like a real mess, and googling 'error inserting h826d' doesn't
produce much help - merely others with similar unsolved problems, or
posts in languages I don't grok.

I say it only supports up to 2.6.30 because I downloaded and extracted the
archive, and it has source code plus precompiled object code. They have a
separate directory for the precompiled object code, with a separate dir for
each kernel version, up to 2.6.30.

Did Ubuntu 9.10 initially come with a kernel <= 2.6.30?

ubuntu don't usually change even minor kernel versions (ie 2.6.30 to
2.6.31) during a release cycle. Even 9.10 beta had 2.6.31. Avermedia's
advertising is simply wrong and in many jurisdictions would entitle
sharifah to his money back.

Anyway, another lesson on how NOT to join the open source community.
Just reinforces my point that even if it worked now, a kernel upgrade
is likely to kill it.

Death to binary blobs!

According to the release notes in the Avermedia 64-bit beta driver:

1.1 Supported Distributions

This version of driver installer supports kernel 2.6.17~2.6.31.

For whatever that is worth....

I would be interested to see what the Avermedia driver installation log
had to say when the installation failed:

/tmp/H826D-install.log

...

In looking at the last installer dialog screen, he appears to have
symbol issues prior to trying to set up this device.

Is it likely a remnant of the previous issues he had trying to get the
303U card running?

If so, I would be very tempted to wipe the install, and start with a
fresh ubuntu install...

Good luck, ummu!

I always prefer a fresh start when there are unknown variables that
could be the cause of the problem.

If you wipe it clean, and start fresh, you will have computer that is in
a known state (or at least as close to known as you can get).

In addition, you probablu don't have any data to worry about losing yet.
That makes it an even easier choice IMO.

I saw a couple of posts on the Internet earlier today that the people
who were able to get this device working, installed the avermedia
drivers before plugging it into the usb port.
