PVR-350 and Live-TV not working

Hello all,

I just installed MythTV using the Ubuntu repos on a new Ubuntu 9.10
installation. Everything seems to be fine, and the card worked fine on the
old 9.04 install (which I kept on another HD in case this happened...). I
have tested the card, and it works under VLC when set to PVR.

Anyway, I have setup the card using the TV tuner, created the source and
everything. I closed the backend setup, opened the frontend and when I go
to "Watch TV", all I get is "Please W..." for about 15 or 20 seconds, then
it dumps me back to the menu. I have been trying to research this issue for
the last half hour at least, but I am getting nowhere fast. Does anyone
happen to know what might be causing this? I would GREATLY appreciate any
help you can provide!

Thanks,
Harrison T.

What do your log files say?

Re: PVR-350 and Live-TV not working [In reply to]

My log files are about 70KB for the front-end and backend combined. I tried
to attach it to my original message, but it bounced, so I figured I would
just go without it. In hindsight, that was a bad idea. Anyway, attached
below are some excerpts from each of the logs. Hopefully they hold what you
need. Please let me know if anything else might help you to help me!

Looks like you set:

Preset tuner to channel
Leave this blank unless you have an external tuner that is connected to
the tuner input of your card. If so, you will need to specify the preset
channel for the signal (normally 3 or 4).

When you should have just paid attention to the first three words of the
description.

If you're using S-Video or Composite, you /must/ leave the setting blank.

If you are trying to use the tuner with a STB that outputs on channel 4,
you either need to properly set the "Starting Channel" for the video
source or you have an input connections configuration problem (see
http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv/users/264034#264034 ).

Re: PVR-350 and Live-TV not working [In reply to]

Thanks Mike for your help. You were correct about the Input connections
being incorrect. I deleted the channel I had created (channel scan just
refused to run earlier), and then deleted the Video Source and started
again.

I ran the channel scan, and it found channel 2 (which doesn't exist in
reality... oh well) and it stopped at channel 3. I opened up the frontend
and it tuned to static on channel 2! Unfortunately, it stays that way when
I try to type in the channel number. I can't get it to tune to channel 4
properly if I manually create it (using the same settings that channel 2 was
created with). It will crash with an error.

The status of the channel scan stays at "Scanning us-bcast 2 No Lock" and
just stays there. Signal Strength and Scan are both at 0%. I just searched
a bit and I can't find anything at all. I just need channel 4 to work so
that I can tune into my DirecTV R-15 receiver. I will be setting up another
box later using S-Video, but I need this input to work too for occasional
recording from this box from across the house.

Thanks again for your help.

See the link I posted. You should /never/ do a scan for analog channels
in the US. The link I posted has full instructions for how to clean up
what you have and then properly get your channels from your listings
provider.

Re: PVR-350 and Live-TV not working [In reply to]

This may-or-may-not be a dumb question, but there is no channel 4 here in my
area on DirecTV, so how would I be able to create this channel to tune to if
I use the Schedules Direct grabber?? I'd hate to spend several half-hour
sessions of running mythfilldatabase to get this solved, but I will if
that's what you say is correct.

Also, I did skim through the page you linked to. I must have missed that
section the first time. Sorry about that.

Thanks again,

If you use a different channel number to tune the channels listed at
Schedules Direct, edit the frequency ID after you "Fetch channels from
listings provider."

So, if SD says that your Fox station is on 8723, but you use 4 to tune
it, just use the MythWeb or mythtv-setup channel editor to change the
frequency ID 8723 to 4 (or vice versa). You can also optionally change
the channel number (as that's user-editable data, too--channel number is
primarily a display thing, but also used to allow you to tune a specific
channel in LiveTV by typing in numbers).

If you get channels that SD doesn't list, you probably have selected the
wrong "provider" stuff for your lineup (IIRC, for satellite, there's one
that includes the local channels and one that doesn't).

Mike,

Thank-You SO MUCH for your help! That last bit worked like a charm.

I just have one more question for you. I see that you mentioned fixing
top-posting twice now. I have no clue what that means, but should I be
removing something from my email before I send it or something? I am new to
mailing lists and still learning MythTV, so I would like to be able to be a
participating member of this list and contribute without causing anyone any
problems. If you have a second to answer this one, I would appreciate it.

Thanks again and thanks in advance,

Sorry, I should have explained it to you on the second time, but I got a
bit lazy.

Top posting is posting your reply at the top of all the other content in
the message. Inline posting is what I've done here--posting replies to
specific parts of the previous message inline/interleaved with the
message itself. Bottom posting would be just posting your entire
response on the bottom of the message to which you're replying.

The list rules basically say:
a) Post in plain text (or at the very least multipart with a plain
text part)
b) Trim any not-relevant information from your replies--which always
includes the list signatures from previous posts--but be careful not to
remove too much (leave enough that the message stands on its own with
questions and answers both)
c) Use inline- or bottom-posting.

More info here: http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Mailing_List_etiquette and
http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Mailing_List_etiquette#Bottom_post

Thanks for asking/wanting to follow list norms!
