Mythdora Upgrade 0.22 - no sound and no device

After following the guide posted by pisani:

http://www.mythdora.com/?q=node/5029

I upgraded the box to 0.22 as per the post - all successful, except for some localised oddities (Apple trailers gone, gmythmovies breaks Infocentre), but the biggie is that I currently have no sound.
In fact I have no sound outside MythTV currently

I have a Gigabyte E7AUM-DS2H , and have successfully had sound over HDMI working in 0.21, as per the Digital HowTo

Currently I have tried disabling the onboard sound and leaving HDMI sound set to Auto' in BIOS, but this has made no difference
The output of aplay -l with onboard disabled, and HDMI Audio set to 'Auto:

device_list:223: no soundcards found...

with onboard enabled and HDMI Audio set to 'Auto':

**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 0: ALC883 Analog [ALC883 Analog]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 1: ALC883 Digital [ALC883 Digital]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

..which does not include the IEC958 entries I had before

nvidia-180.60-1
kernel-2.6.27.38
alsa 1.0.21 (1.0.17 actually)

Could there be a module missing? Or a version difference?

In the archives, Jarod mentions something regarding using a kernel from updates-testing, but I know that's going to involve a boatload of kmod dependency issues, so I'd rather not introduce new issues if possible

thanks for any help

john

What do you see in alsamixer? Have you enabled those outputs there? I
would assume the update would not have changed your bios settings or I would
suggest looking there as well.

The IEC958 is completely MIA, and neither have the BIOS settings changed.

I'm at a loss here, and wondering wether there are kernel or nvidia issues

cheers - your help is appreciated

Did you ever resolve this issue? I just upgraded mythbuntu, and I
have the same gigabyte mainboard, and my audio disappeared. I never
used HDMI, so in that way we vary. Best tidbit of info that I've
found is that when I rmmod/insmod the snd_hda_intel driver, I get this
out of my dmesg:

[403357.232645] HDA Intel 0000:00:08.0: PCI INT A disabled
[403397.057863] HDA Intel 0000:00:08.0: PCI INT A -> Link[AAZA] -> GSI
21 (level, low) -> IRQ 21
[403397.057898] HDA Intel 0000:00:08.0: setting latency timer to 64
[403397.612012] hda_codec: Unknown model for ALC889A, trying
auto-probe from BIOS...
[403397.628105] input: HDA Digital PCBeep as
/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:08.0/input/input7
[404279.540847] HDA Intel 0000:00:08.0: PCI INT A disabled

So far the search for the "Unknown model" line yielded one reference,
but no solutions.

I am attaching the output of the 'alsa-info' script, since it may
contain other useful tidbits.

Cheers,

ben
