Retro-wide ready for testers

I think I've themed just about everything in Retro-wide, so I would
appreciate Retro fans downloading and trying it out. Please let me know if
you find any windows that are not themed.

http://www.westnet.com/~chris/Mythtv/Retro-wide.tar.gz

There is one outstanding problem I have not been able to track down.
A picture is worth 1k words -- in this case, 2 screenshots of the Video
(tree) list

http://www.westnet.com/~chris/Mythtv/Retro-folder.jpg
http://www.westnet.com/~chris/Mythtv/Retro-file.jpg

When a folder is selected everything looks like I would expect. When a file
is selected, an alpha background appears following the basic shape of the
Watch Recordings backround.

I am working from Mythbuntu's video-ui.xml file, but I've discovered this
exists even in the unmodified Mythbuntu/video-ui.xml . I suspect it's
covered by the Mythbuntu background

But -- I can't find anything that would create an -- area ? -- in that
shape. I can't find it in the Mythbuntu file, so I think it's inherited.
Any pointers as to where a shape like that is defined ?

If the 0.21 files were available, I would say it was solid-background.png or
trans-background.png -- but those files aren't in my share/mythtv/themes
tree.

nice work... thanks for spending the time working on it.
I did noticed alot of people over at the mythbuntu forum wanting to get the
retro theme
converted as it was though, in a non wide screen because all the themes
appear
to be wide screen anymore & their monitors are not. what would it take to be
done
in a 4:3 resolution for those that dont have wide screen..???

I'm not sure. What I've done is taken elements of the current default,
MythCenter wide, and Mythbuntu. If someone wanted to make a 4:3 Retro again,
they could probably use what I've done as a template, and work from the 4:3
default and Mythcenter.

I would guess I've spent 10-15 hours on this, though most of it was while
watching TV.

I should aso mention a thanks to Nicolas Riendeau for finding a spelling
mistake of Dalmatians in my screenshots. :-)

Now, does anyone have an idea where that background mask is comming from ?

I could be wrong, but I remember reading somewhere that MythUI is aspect
ratio agnostic. If so, shouldn't it work just fine on a 4:3?

Not really. The images are squished, and text over-runs the boxes.

There is a difference between "working" and being designed properly. I
use the Mythbuntu theme, which is designed to be a wide screen theme,
on a SD 4:3 set. It works, but it would be nicer if it were designed
for a 4:3 SD set. Then the text wouldn't be cut off in some of the
dialog boxes and the fanart wouldn't be squished, etc.

I'm thinking about getting into theming , I got a lot of idea's.
I did a handful of changes to the older themes for my personal use, but it
wasn't truly my work.. just changing backgrounds, adding things to the
menu's, and moving some things around. It sounds like it would fun.
Other than I'm no good at artwork..

Re: Retro-wide ready for testers [In reply to]

Thanks for taking this theme update on. It's my favorite by far. I'm running the 12/02/2009 version and having trouble with the main mythvideo screen. I use the gallery style listing and this is what I see:

http://tinyurl.com/ybwh94o

Ignore the Xterm, but the background image is a bit funky. ;) That image is a cover file in my video collection, but as you know, it probably should not be there. :)

Also, I feel the color of the fonts are too dark. The white on the mainmenu is fine, but the font color on at least the mythvideo and upcoming recordings pages are too dark and difficult for me to read. Again, see the image from above for an example.

Thanks!
Mike

You mean an image at all, or that particular image ? I'm using the 'fanart'
image as background, an idea taken from Mythbuntu. For folders, Myth seems
to use the first availabe one it can find, So, I would guess in our Video
directory, "40 year old Virgin" is the first with a post, and "Back to the
Future" is the first with Fanart.

I don't have multiple video folders. Are you using Video storage groups ?

That I've fixed, along with some other tweaks. Try the latest version:

I mean that particular background image, but your explaination makes
sense. How can I change what image it uses?

I am not using video storage groups. I just have two places mythvideo
looks for videos. In my case that's /myth/md0/video and
/myth/md1/video2. It's set up by having:
/myth/md0/video:/myth/md1/video2 as the mythvideo directory in setup.

I just installed your newest version and I can see some of the
improvements. I still have difficulty reading Manage Recordings >
Upcoming Recordings when the hi-lite bar is over a scheduled event. I
can read the details on the lower half of the screen, but I have
difficulty reading the listing on top when it's hi-lited.

Keep up the great work.

Mike

For that directory ? That I don't know if you can (I would like to myself).

If you want to remove the fanart you would edit video-ui.xml, and edit the
<imagetype name="fanart">
sections.

OK, I've tweaked that. Give it a shot -- and let me know of anything else
you see.

Re: Retro-wide ready for testers [In reply to]

Hi Chris:

Using your latest code I found this in my frontend:

2009-12-11 13:01:40.467 Loading window theme from /usr/share/mythtv/themes/Retro-wide/schedule-ui.xml
2009-12-11 13:01:40.489 Theme error: Unknown widget type
Type: 'color'
Name: ''
Line: 558

It does not prevent the theme from loading, but it's there.

Ok, here's what I can see:

1. Re: hi-lite bar in Upcoming Recordings. Still difficult to read what's under it. I actually see it in several menus. Upcoming Recordings is just an example. I think the problem is that whenever some text is green, it tends to blend into the blue as blue is one of the colors that makes up green. I don't know if it would be better to lighten the background of the entire theme or make the green lighter.

2. Manage Recordings > Schedule Recordings > Post Processing: The back box that shows what is selected was hard for me to pick out. Maybe change that to an outline of the box in yellow?

3. Manage Recordings > Schedule Recordings > Program Finder: The vertical alignment of the white horizontal hilite thing is off to the north. :)

Thanks,
Mike

Take a look now. What I actually did was darken the background.

I made the background green to match the spinbox.

I don't see this, but I have had problems with alignment at different
resolutions. What resolutions to you run at, and can you probide a screen
shot.

Re: Retro-wide ready for testers [In reply to]

Hi Chris:

I don't follow the mailing list closely, so I missed your post from
February.

I have a patch to submit to you for missing button labels/horizontal
alignment in the filetypes section of video-ui.xml. You can find it
attached. These buttons previously overlapped each other and had no
labels. Look fine to me now @ 1920x1080 and 1440x900.

It is easier to see now. Thanks.

Perfect thanks.

Actually, this looks fine now. Dunno what changed, but FWIW, I'm
looking at 1920x1080.
