Never built a system from scratch - will this work?

Hi,

My myth box just bit the dust and I'm clamoring to have a replacement
ready as soon as possible. Since I've never built one from scratch I
was wondering if I'll be ok with this setup:

----------
GIGABYTE GA-MA785GM-US2H AM3/AM2+/AM2 AMD 785G HDMI Micro ATX AMD
Motherboard
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128394

Antec New Solution NSK2480 Black/Silver 0.8mm cold-rolled steel MicroATX
Desktop Computer Case 380W Power Supply
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129034

AMD Athlon II X2 250 Regor 3.0GHz 2 x 1MB L2 Cache Socket AM3 65W
Dual-Core Processor
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103681
-----------

One thing I'm concerned about is whether the motherboard will fit in the
case. I tried looking at the pictures, but I'm having a tough time
determining if all the back panel jacks and stuff will line up with
opening. I intend to move my 2 PVR 150's into it as well.

I'm planning to use my existing IDE disks but it looks like it will only
support two of them. (I have 3)

Do you think I should not use the onboard VATI ideo card and get an Nvidia?

If this case is too tight, what would you recommend that also has 24+8
power leads?

Thank you!
Rick

1: That looks like a good start. Don't forget ram, dvd drive, etc.
2: Yes, the motherboard ports will exit the case fine. The plate with
all the portholes in it is able to be knocked out, and your
motherboard -shoud- come with one to replace it with (if it doesn't,
you can call the manufacturer and get one)
3: the PVR150's are gonna be right next to each other...be sure you
keep this in a well ventilated area...that could get hot.
4: Yep...only 2 IDE's ... and don't forget your DVD drive might be IDE as well.
5: NVidia . . . and see #3 about heat.

Remember...things are always cramped in a mmpc.
Hope that helps!

Motherboards come with a metal panel to fit into the back of the case so
that the ports aren't an issue. If you have 2 slots on the mobo and the
case, then your cards should be fine.

Might be a problem. If it has only 1 IDE port (most do) then you have to
share the IDE port to attach 2 drives. This will cause performance problems.
If it will cause problems for your uses is hard to say. I only mention it so
you can be aware of it. I'd switch to SATA disks if you can, for at least
the recordings.

VDPAU is really nice. I would do that, personally. I use NVidia in all my
frontend boxes.

It should fit fine - I have a NSK2480 and my MicroATX Gigabyte board
fitted fine. Excellent case BTW, I've been very pleased with it. Quiet,
easy to fit stuff in and looks good.

Yes, it only has rooms for two drives - ut the rubber grommits and
suspension make them really quite :) Perhpas time to upgrade to a couple of
1TB drivers and just copy everything over? :)

Alternatively if you don't want a DVD drive you could probably slot one in
there. Wouldn't be as quiet as the dedicated bays though.

Absolutely. Go Nvidia.

No opinion, but I think you'll have no problem.

This is the current kitlist that I have in mind on order to build
systems for a few friends and colleagues here:

If that can help...

You might consider this case
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811121010

<http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811121010>and an ATX
system as it will hold your three drives and has lots of room. Also, I
didn't see that you mentioned your tuners but the HDHR is the way to go. I
use this case. I bought 3 silent fans when I got the case, two in the rear
and 1 in the front.

My son just bought this case
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ImageGallery.aspx?CurImage=11-112-218-S01&ISList=11-112-218-S01,11-112-218-S02,11-112-218-S03,11-112-218-S04,11-112-218-S05,11-112-218-S06,11-112-218-S07,11-112-218-S08,11-112-218-S09,11-112-218-S10,11-112-218-S11,11-112-218-S12&S7ImageFlag=1&Item=N82E16811112218&Depa=0&WaterMark=1&Description=LIAN%20LI%20PC-A05NB%20Black%20Aluminum%20ATX%20Mini%20Tower%20Computer%20Case

and it really looks nice and has great air flow so his processor with a big
heat sink runs almost room temperature. It is a tower but really nice
looking. If I had room for a tower case, I would switch out the one I have
as this one is really nice. The price is probably the same once you add in
the case fans that are needed with the other one I mentioned.

It all depends on how much room you have. Room determines case determines
MB size and that determines how many drives you can run etc.

I ordered all the components for the system last night after going cross
eyed from reading so many specs. I just realized this morning that the
motherboard is a micro-atx size, but the case I ordered is atx. Am I
going to have a problem?

This is the case I ordered:

No you should be fine I put microATX in to ATX cases on several
occasions. I believe the microATX mounts line up with ATX mounts by
design or the case provide mounts for microATX. But the microATX
boards fit in ATX cases just fine.

I have that case, it is a very nice case. Very quiet and lots of space,
very easy to install disk drives as you do it from the front. You will like
that case.
