Performance of frontend on OSX?

Hi,
I'm trying to persuade my old Mac Mini, G4 1.25Ghz with 1Gb ram and
OSX 10.4.11 to run a Myth frontend.
I've downloaded the latest Myth 0.21 fixes frontend from David
Snider's site (thanks David) 20091109 I think it is.

The frontend does run but the performance when playing back video
seems rather poor?
It looks like it is dropping a block of frames every half second or
more, its hard to describe.

Do you think this is that the Mac is just not up to the job or do you
think I should try another build?

Thanks

Mike

A G4 mini should be able to playback standard definition TV recordings, but you'll need a newer machine for high def.

By "Newer machine" do you mean an Intel-based unit? Or should it be possible
to play back HD with a G4, or possibly a G5 (obviously there are no G5 Minis,
but I'm wondering about a G5 iMac).

Thanks Craig
can you tell me if the playback of SD will be on par with a more
powerful processor, ie AMD X2 3000?
Or should I expect many dropped frames?

How does it perform on your G4?

Thanks
Mike

I was able to use .20 on my 1.25ghz eMac running OS X 10.4, but I saw
similar results to what you describe with .21 from the snider pad. I
installed debian etch on the same machine, and it played back SD quite
well. I've since replaced it with a zotac ion based machine. Good
luck.

Sorry, I'm passing along second-hand reports--I don't have a G4 or G5 here. I recall reports that a dual G5 was able to handle HDTV decoding OK. This may have been with 0.20, though.

If you already have the machine, just download a binary from Dave Snider and give it a go.

We used to use a powerpc mini as a frontend. It could play SD or anything
we'd transcoded down to 480, but it couldn't handle live or recorded HD. We
eventually ditched it and moved to an intel based box that could handle live
HD.

Brian.

I have a dual G5 tower running as a combination backend/frontend. It
works fine for HD playback.

Just another datapoint.
