Odd audio problem. Can only get audio via spdif

(NB: Abit motherboard, GeForce 7050/nForce 630 chipset.)

Before my Fedora 12 install, my system could play audio via the TV's speakers (connected to the mobo standard speaker out) (if the video was analog) or from my stereo system (for digital recordings), which has an spdif connection to my mobo. I could live with this.

Now I can only play via the spdif port, when ALSA:spdif is selected. And it works for both analog and digital recordings! I can't get any other ALSA device to work.

What puzzles me is that when I test my audio devices via Fedora's Settings / Multimedia section, I can get sound out of the standard speakers.

Fedora's multimedia section mentions a Pulse Audio device. Why doesn't this show up as a device under Myth? Maybe the ALSA devices are too low level?

Hi Stefan,
My understanding is that pulseaudio and mythtv don't play nicely with each
other. Perhaps if you remove pulseaudio, things might work better. I
cannot remember with exact packages need to be pulled, but googling
pulseaudio and mythtv should reveal some discussions on the topic.
Best of luck,

Re: Odd audio problem. Can only get audio via spdif [In reply to]

I am running into a similar issue. I have sound in fedora 12 in all other
apps except mythfrontend when using the analog out jack. I have tried to
change the audio to ALSA:default and ALSA:analog, but no sound comes out.
My speakers are connected to the analog out jack.

I have spent many hours trying to figure out how to get spdif and
analog out at the same time. My own solution is to use a second
external spdif decoder for the TV set to stereo while the HiFi is set
to 4.1 surround. If you figure this out, please let me know.

SIGH.

I fixed things by going to HDMI*, and selecting the ALSA:hdmi device in setup:general. I'd put off going to HDMI because I'd heard it was a mess to get going, but it worked fine after a moment tinkering with the nvidia config GUI. Now my digital and analog programs both play from the TV.

But for some reason things go silent when I request 5.1 audio in the front end setup:general section.

Stefan

* Harbor Freight sells a 3' HDMI cable for something like $10! It seems to work fine. Go figure.

You have to select stereo even for 5.1, it is just a quirk of Myth.

Monoprice sells a 3 ft HDMI cable for $3. They work too.

In that ticket it suggests setting the audio device to ALSA: nopulse
and putting this in .asoundrc

pcm.nopulse {
type hw
card 0
}

ctl.nopulse {
type hw
card 0

}

Why is this different than setting ALSA:default
and setting this in asound.conf (and erasing .asoundrc)?

pcm.!default {
type hw
card 0
}

ctl.!default {
type hw
card 0
}

It also suggests setting the Mixer device to ALSA:nopulse, but that's
wrong. It should still be ALSA:default.

Heh, you mentioned asound.conf. It shouldn't be different (assuming all
is done properly). Anyway, the other thread may help you since it's
Fedora specific.

You use asound.conf for a global configuration and then individual
users can override this with .asoundrc files

I always think of a myth box as a dedicated box where you want just
one configuration. But, what I said was aimed more at the content of
the file than which file you use. I don't see why changing the name
of the sound driver to nopulse instead of just properly defining
default is the way to go.

Yeah, it's not inherently better. In theory, the default should be set
up as the most-often-used configuration and all other configs defined in
the ALSA conf with human-readable/rememberable/understandable names.

I didn't notice you had mentioned /etc/asound.conf originally, so I
figured it was changing your config back after deleting $HOME/.asoundrc.
