Scaleo E Setup - Intel HDA sound

I now have this box running as a frontend, but I'm still having
trouble with sound. If I run alsamixer and crank all the levels up to
100 then I get sound out of the TV - but there's a lot of hiss, and
when I skip forward in Myth then the PCM level resets to 70 and the
sound goes quiet.
# lspci | grep -i audio
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6
Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 04)
I loaded the module with
# modprobe snd_hda_intel model=3stack-digout
Any suggestions ?
