HD-PVR: Trouble Recording NFL Football Game in HD and 0.22

First, let me say the results I'm getting with the Hauppauge 1212,
0.22, and a frontend that supports VDPAU is incredible. Recorded
files are smaller and the frontend uses only 30% of the CPU
( Intel Duo at 3Ghz ).

Has anyone recorded an NFL Football game in HD with the
HD-PVR and 0.22? Any problems?

I am consistently getting gaps in my recording. 1-2 seconds
of frames ( 60 frames ) just missing.

I've tried a couple of games and its consistant.

Running Mythbackend with debug=all, I see messages like the
following in my logs about the time the frames are skipped.

I don't know what they mean, but words like clear, skip, flush, discard frames,
reset, do not sound positive.

I also had similar recording jumps with Saturday Night Live ( SNL ), but good results
with pre-recorded shows like Monk. News shows seem to work fine, also.

Re: HD-PVR: Trouble Recording NFL Football Game in HD and 0.22 [In reply to]

I was able to record the Patriots game this past Sunday in HD. I set my
cable box to output 720p so that the commflag job can keep up with the
broadcast (more or less) as 1080i broadcasts take at least 2x the broadcast
time to run commflag. It was pretty much smooth sailing for the entire
game. I had 2 slight hiccups during the replay of the game and that's about
it. I don't watch the game live but I do start watching the recording
before the game is actually over.

Have you gotten the latest firmware for the 1212? Hauppage is on version
1.5.6 I believe. I'm not sure how powerful a Core2Duo @ 3GHz is compared to
my AMD Athlon X2 5200+, but I typically am running at or less than 10% CPU
with VDPAU while recording and watching at the same time. That's about 2.5%
for mythbackend and 6%-8% for mythfrontend; 30% seems a bit high so I'm
wondering if that's somehow related?

Do you have an up to date HDPVR driver? I am running on Fedora 10, and the
HDPVR driver is included in the kernel. I am running the most current
version of the kernel via the fedora rpm at 2.6.27.38-170.2.113.fc10.i686.

Re: HD-PVR: Trouble Recording NFL Football Game in HD and 0.22 [In reply to]

Derek,

I've locked my cable box at 720P also. Before, the HD PVR was recording at 480i because that
was what the cable box was putting out, even on HD chanels.

How can I tell which version of the Hauppauge firmware I'm using? Their documentation is a bit
sparse.

How can I be sure I'm playing back using the VDPAU features of my video card? From what I read,
using the High Quality playback profile triggers the VDPAU.

I did see that I'm back one level on the kernel. I'm upgrading to the same version you mentioned
now.

Thanks,

Mike

Recent builds have introduced 3 VDPAU playback profiles. If you're not using
one of those, and you haven't modified your current profile to use the VDPAU
decoder and renderer, you're not using VDPAU.

See: http://mythtv.org/wiki/VDPAU#Display_Profiles

Mike, did you ever update the firmware on the HDPVR at all? If you haven't,
chances are you don't have the latest version. I don't know how to tell
which version you do have. I do know that the only way to update the
firmware will require a windows PC; it's possible that the HDPVR drivers for
windows can tell you what version is installed. Unless your HDPVR was
manufactured after May 2009 it has an older firmware. You can get the
latest here: http://www.hauppauge.com/site/support/support_hdpvr.html.

I don't know what the high quality profile default settings are as I changed
them long ago. In Setup -> TV Settings -> Playback on screen 3 your profile
should show VDPAU for the high def resolutions. If it says something else
(ffmpeg or xvmc for example), then you are not using VDPAU. The NVidia
chipset on your video card will determine your deinterlacer choices as well.
If you have a 9xxx series or better you should be able to use Advanced (2x,
Hw) as your deinterlacer, which seems to be the best one. See the Wiki
documentation for editing the playback profiles, although it's all a series
of select boxes so it's fairly easy to muddle through. I only have an HDPVR
as my capture device and my camcorder outputs h264 videos, so I have if rez
> 0 0 -> vdpau & vdpau as my only setting. If you have a mix of video
recording devices you may want to have a more detailed profile.

Re: HD-PVR: Trouble Recording NFL Football Game in HD and 0.22 [In reply to]

Derek,

Thanks for the help.

I must have read the instructions wrong. I thought prior to 0.22, you had to create your own VDPAU
profiles, but with the release of 0.22, they had three predefined Playing profiles. I selected the
"High Quality".

But, now that I created my own profile for VDPAU, My CPU usage is down to 3%, so it must be
working now.

Thanks for the help.

Mark
