Strange VDPAU error

Well tonight something strange started happening with myth playback.

The frontend during playback of two differnt shows stopped in the middle and
showed the Recordings display with the error "Serious error during playback"
Or something close to that.

Going back and playing it seems to allow it to play fine. On the first show
it happend about 45 minutes in. The second show it happened about 5 minutes
in.

The log show the following

2009-02-15 22:25:44.397 VDPAU Error: DISPLAY PRE-EMPTED. Aborting playback.

So is this
1. A problem with my configuration or build (using trunk 19992)
2. A known issue with VDPAU or should I report one
3. A known issue with myth VDPAU support or should I report one

Any other thoughts.

Realistically, it could any combination of your system setup, a VDPAU
bug or mythtv's implementation of VDPAU.

You can get more background on preemption from:-

ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/vdpau/doxygen/html/group__display__preemption.html

Is there anything on your system that might be triggering it?

Given nvidia's description, I can't see it really being a mythtv issue
in the first place. What mythtv is missing at the moment, however, is
the ability to completely re-initialise vdpau when it does happen.
That will come - just not sure when.

Regards

Mark

This same thing started happening to me this weekend. Recently I have
been having problems starting HD shows, which could be fixed by going in
multiple times, going to an SD show first (which always works) or
sometimes I would have to restart X. After updating SVN this doesn't
seem to happen anymore, but now it dies during playing with the same
error that you are getting. Seems to be a fairly new problem. Wonder
what could be causing the preemption?

I have had this happen on my trunk build of mythtv [20568], built it last
night. The caps on my old NVidia 6200LE gave up the ghost recently, I was
using ffmpeg which worked very well. Now that I purchased a 8400GS, I
wanted to check out the VDPAU. I'm having lots of problems with it.

1) Every once in a while when I execute mythfrontend, it brings up the
theme background then crashes back to the desktop with just a "segfault"
error. It'll crash like that twice in a row, then work. This may not be
VDPAU since I haven't even initiated video playback at this point, but it's
really weird and it did not do this with my 6200LE.
2) I have a studder problem when the OSD is up, lots of others have had this
issue. Apparently, it's a problem with any overlays because turning on the
closed captioning also makes the video unwatchable. I wonder if this is a
limitation of VDPAU, or is it something that might actually work someday. I
ask because we use closed captioning a lot. If it'll never be as good as
ffmpeg, I'll just toss this new 8400GS and get something else that can do
it.
3) Occasionally, selecting a recording will cause the frontend to crash
reporting seemly random errors (different error description every time).

I recently had this same error with nvida 180 and a upgrade to 185
driver fixed the problem. I found this thread while searching for a
fix and am posting in the hope it will help someone else.

you'll be one of the very few for whom 185.xx helped...

Avoid those drivers, terrible, very unstable ... buggy openGL library
(segfault very often), complete hang of the PC in some situations

Re: Strange VDPAU error [In reply to]

I to are having the same problems. I am running trunk 20588 with
dvb-s2 patches for watching hd channels. vdpau has giving me a hard
time. It has been hard to figger out what is making my system crash
but i have narrowed down to vdpau nice deinterlacers! If i use
temporal or advance 2x my system either hardlocks (need to powercycle)
or while watching a video it says "recovered for video error".

I have now set up a playback profile that workes pretty well! i am now
using ffmpeg with yadif 2x for sd contents and vdpau with bob 2x for
hd material, Have been running this for 2 days now without a crash
:=). Sometimes it does exit to the main menu with "to many video
errors" but that seems to be rare.

I really hope someone has the time to update the s2api patches to
newer trunk :=)
My gtf card is a 8600gt 512 mb

Kind regards Staffan

Re: Strange VDPAU error [In reply to]

I'm bringing this back to life. I upgraded to 0.22 last week and tonight
was the first night we really watched a lot on it. I'm using the latest
Mythbuntu 9.10 release with all updates. I watched about 2 hours of shows.
About 1hr and 35 minutes in I got the serious error message and it exited
out of the program.

I thought I had read somewhere this was fixed in the latest driver/myth
release but I guess not. Anyone have any insight or thoughts.

Thanks,
steve

The issues I was having (segfaults during playback and initiating
playback) turned out to be a bad 8400GS card. I returned it and purchased a
9500GT and I'd never go back. I haven't had any VDPAU problems with my
9500GT card except for the OSD studder which is more of an annoyance. Could
be that you are overheating, does yours have an active cooling device on it?
