What happened to the standalone player?

What happened to the standalone player?

I used to be able to use the command 'mythtv foo.mkv' to play media
with the MythTV player, apart from the full frontend. I would use this
to test playback profiles as well as set A/V sync values for mkvmerge.
I lost this somewhere along the way. Was it removed for some reason or
is there something wrong with my install (from source)?

In 0.22 and later, it's called 'mythavtest'.

Because it's not a standalone player so much as a MythTV Audio/Video
testing application.

Is there a syntax for this that allows this test player to play a file from another Linux box on the LAN, e.g.

mythavtest file:{IPADDRESS}/parent/child/file.mpg

which does not seem to work.

Also can this receive a udp (or other?) stream direct from a DVB-T Hdhomerun over the LAN?

It accepts any standard myth URI. That means
myth://[storagegroup@]backend[:port]/relative/path/to/file.ext

This is only for testing of playback, not recording.

you could try the mythtv:// protocol

or nfs/cifs mount the filesystem.

My apologies for not being clearer here Raymond, I only intended the question to cover playback.

(Trying to avoid the why one might one to do this question here, which it would probably be hard to find a new perspective to
present in the present company)

The only streaming capacity the playback code has is from the backend.
Any streaming capacity any frontend plugin may have is supplemented by
the plugin itself, or some external program it is calling. I have no
idea what issue you may be tip-toeing around, but all recording capacity
exists in the backend. If you want to pull new content into MythTV, it
must be done by a recorder (physical or virtual) on the backend.
