Remote Mount to Storage Group

Just a quick question,
If you mount a remote NFS / CIFS share to the master backend and then
set this mount point as a storage group directory, does the media get
streamed straight from the mounted source to the front-end or does it
get passed through the master backend first? Does the backend give
instructions to the front-end on how to access the media or does the
backend do the accessing?
e.g.
FreeNAS NFS --> Master Backend --> Frontend
or
FreeNAS NFS --> Frontend
