Theming contest/image licensing question

Is there a good "known safe" stock image site out there? I.e. if I find an
image at Site X it is by definition safe to use in a theme someone hopes to
distribute someday? The theming contest made me think of this, although I
guess it applies to anybody looking to make a distributable theme.

If no such site exists, is there some commonly used language I should look
for that would indicate the image is safe to use?

For example, a quick browse found this image:

http://www.sxc.hu/photo/454273

Governed by this license agreement:
Standard restrictions <http://www.sxc.hu/help/7_2> apply and
float<http://www.sxc.hu/profile/float>must be notified when using the
photo for any public work.

where "float" is the author and the "standard restrictions" are here:

http://www.sxc.hu/help/7_2

Everything reads "ok" to me, but I admittedly don't know what I'm looking
for... what sorts of verbiage should I look for as a red flag?

The last thing I'd want is to spend a bunch of time on a theme I'm happy
with only to find out I shouldn't have used half of my images :)

Thanks,

Jack

It will be easy to find images that *you* are free to use. The hang up
in this case is are you free to distribute them. In this case the
answer is no, unless you get permission from the artist. From your
link:

Always ask permission from the photographer if you want to use the Image
* In website templates that You intend to sell or distribute.

Popular licenses for this type of purposes are the Creative Commons
family of license. Flikr does a good job of helping you find works
under these licenses: http://www.flickr.com/creativecommons/

Johnny is spot on here-- sxc is not GPL compatible, but there are a
*very* few out there that are, and those are generally those that
release the images under the less restrictive CC licenses.

http://www.morguefile.com/

is one. Please feel free to join us on the theming list if you need
further assistance.

You could try fotolia.com.

The appropriate Creative Commons license should do. Creative Commons
provide the front end to multiple search engines
<http://search.creativecommons.org/> that will find images for you.

However you choose to find the image, you will need to keep detailed
records about each external image you use and provide information
about where to verify its license. Obviously, it'll need to be GPL
compatible, and a CC license that allows redistribution and derivative
works should work.

I believe that someone pointed to issues with their license the other day in
IRC. I think they prohibit redistribution of the images. I looked at a bunch
of images from there when looking to fill in the missing gaps in Terra
before the release.

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:GPL

I find it is easier to just pick up a camera than to
both find a suitable image online and to clear it.
