Theming Competition --- Approx .23 release date!!

Wow! .22 is released now and there is a theming competition. I am not a
programmer or themer but I was VERY surprised when i read the following on
the contest page"

*First Prize:* A Hauppauge HD-PVR ($249 Value), A Schedules Direct T-Shirt,
a free year of Schedules Direct service, and the inclusion of the theme into
MythTV to ship with MythTV 0.23 *(Due out approximately March 2010).*

http://www.mythtv.org/theming-competition

This is a very big transition of the devs. Setting an approx. release date
of the next version. It used to always be Its done when its done. I think
this is a very good move. Thanks Dev's!

Sounds like they're following the Ubuntu style of scheduled release dates,
and I bet it's no coincidence that that release date is a month before
Ubuntu's. :-)

What, no MythTV T-Shirt or vapourware DVB-T2 tuners for us UK users? :)

Cheers,
Nick

We (ie, a group of the devs) have actually discussed the T-shirt idea, so
who knows, perhaps something might come of it before 0.23 or 0.24. :)

Just out of curiosity, who is ponying up for this? I think this is a
great idea and hopefully will encourage those who have artistic vision
(meaning, not me) to make the greatest program I use even better. I
just hope this is not coming out of anyone's pockets. Of course, if
it is none of our business, never mind.

Awesome plan. Can't wait to get back and see all the UI goodies that
are in .22 and even better knowing there is a newer version coming out
in a few more months.

As mentioned in the announcement (
http://www.mythtv.org/theming-competition ):
---
Open Source friendly vendors such as Hauppauge and Schedules Direct have
been extremely generous in donating new hardware, software and services
for this contest, and they have our very sincere thanks.

So much for my reading comprehension. In my defense, it was buried in
the second sentence.

Makes me even happier that I still use my trusty PVR-350. The day I
stop getting all my HD channels over firewire, I will be happy to
support Hauppauge with the purchase of a HD-PVR.

That wasn't meant as a jab at you--I was just using your post as another
opportunity to post a link to the announcement--hoping to get more
people interested/reading the announcement. :)

Not one, but two great pieces of news today.

(NB - May I suggest that the conteset be mentioned at www.mythtv.org?)

It is mentioned as a link within the 0.22 announcement, though I
suggest it could deserve an announcement of its own.

As Mike noted earlier in the thread, Hauppauge and SD were very kind
and immediately responded to the requests to support our theming
competition. I know that MythTV users in general are already fond of
these two organizations, but I wanted to point out how quickly they
responded in this case so that Myth users can make informed decisions
when next they decided on tuner devices.

I hope everyone interested in theming/the competition will join us on
the theming mailing list or on #mythtv-theming on IRC. We'll get you
up to speed on theming with whatever help you need.

Robert

Don't releases usually get some publicity on slashdot? If there are
plans to announce .22 on slashdot, maybe a prominent notice of the
contest (or its own post) would help drive publicity.

Feel free to submit it :) I'd be surprised if someone hadn't already,
but more submissions probably greatly improves the chances of it
showing up-- Digg/Phoronix/etc. too would be nice.

Yeah Lifehacker.com and Engadget.com are some other places that I see
announcements about mythtv and XBMC. Promoting the new theme
capabilities in these venues could be good for growing the community.
All of these places usually want something more than an announcement
to link to. They would like to see some eye candy or discussion of the
new capabilities etc.
