What themes are people using with .22?

I ask because I'm using metallurgy widescreen and the Watch Videos
screen appears to be borked only using about a quarter of the screen.

Favourites and why please?

I'm pretty sure that I read that Metallurgy is not finished.

Mythbuntu, because I like the dark colour scheme, I like the layout,
and it has enough of the new elements of MythUI to be nice looking,
without being overpowering, confusing, or slow.

havent moved off Blootube-wide. It is just a good looking theme. I do wish
some of the MythUI effects were added but I happy with it.

Blue-abstract-wide for me (although I made some changes to the menu
styles to suit my taste). This theme seems the most complete to me
(just my opinion).

MythCenter. (why? Dunno really, it was the first one I came across
that looked snazy and looked like my old theme. The new default theme
is nice and all but I didnt like the sideways scrolling. I wanted
something that kinda looked like the old theme)

I used to use mythcenter.. You might want to try blue-abstract as it's
similar and makes good use of the new 0.22 features.

My decision comes mostly from the Watch Recordings screen, as I don't
spend so much time in the MythVideo section.

First, I can't get my puny brain wrapped around the "horizontal"
layout of Terra and Graphite, so they are out.

Another thing I look at is the number of recordings that show up on a
page -- more is better. Mythbuntu and MythCenter (Widescreen) have 9,
and Blue Abstract and Metallurgy have 7.

Fanart backgrounds are nice. Mythbuntu is the only one of these four
that includes it. Another post offered a one-line change to enable
fanart in Blue Abstract, but the effect is not good unless you add an
alpha to the buttons to make them semi-transparent, similar to
Mythbuntu.

You may also care (I do) about the quality of the icons for recording
attributes. For example, I like to be able to easily see whether
commercial flagging has been done or whether I have made a cutlist. I
think Mythbuntu has one of the better icon sets.

I customized my main menu to add several items to go into the Watch
Recordings screen with a particular group filter already set (e.g.,
Watch Movies, Watch Kids, Watch Grownups, Watch All). Because of
this, I prefer a grid layout. Metallurgy already does this. It's
easy to modify Blue Abstract to do this. Not so easy for Mythbuntu
unless you like your menu text smashing its associated image.

Someone already mentioned that Metallurgy is officially incomplete. I
have noticed that if I bring up the program guide from within Live TV,
the frontend crashes. Not good for the WAF...

In the end, I use a modified Blue Abstract. Mythbuntu is my close
second choice.

I didn't like the horizontal themes very much, because seemed not to
have as many options at once; and if you don't have a picture for an
item, it seems to look worse than the "vertical" themes. I also found
that at least with my upgrade from mythbuntu 9.04 to 9.10, most of my
choices were designed for widescreen and I'm still in using an older
television. Mythbuntu works very well on my non-widescreen TV.

I think that the fanart backgrounds in Mythvideo definitely look very
cool, I'm still undecided as to whether it is a good thing for
function though. I think the plain gray background may be less
distracting and make it easier to pick the videos.

I guess my biggest complaint is that the gallery view doesn't seem to
have an option to say how many rows and columns anymore. The small
pictures are a bit too small for my kids, having 2 rows with 3
pictures was much better for them.

Hi Jean-Yves,
Would you say Mythbuntu is one of the lighter weight themes?
I'm not interested in fluff or frills, just function.
Less resources, the better.
Been using Mythcenter but I hear it's gone away in 0.22. Looking for a lean replacement.
Thanks for the info.

Mythcenter and Mythcenter (Widescreen) are still in 0.22, they are what
I use. Your confusion might be from some messages that said mythcenter
is not a theme that uses some of the the newer capabilities added to the
'mythui' that is present in 0.22.

MythCenter as a theme option is available, but make no mistake,
MythCenter as a theme *is* gone. The only thing that someone who
selects MythCenter will see is a MythCenter menu, and every single UI
screen will be falling back to default and default-wide (with a
Mythcenter background image), just as any broken or incomplete theme
would. The MythCenter of old is gone.

Yes. None of the old themes exist as they were, they all fall back to
default/default-wide. Metallurgy is partially ported but the only one
with a real port in progress.

A note for anyone using metallurgy.... Copying Mythbuntu/video-ui.xml
over to metallurgy works pretty well. It almost looks like the
Mythbuntu author used metallurgy as an example, because the icon
locations are consistent.

It is not perfect, but the imperfections are hidden if you have
artwork available for the video ;-)

How much work is there involved in 'porting' an old theme to the new situation?
My family was quite accustomed to Titivillus, so I would be willing to spend
some time on that theme.

Pretty much the same amount of work as writing a theme from scratch,
minus design time since you're just copying something. Somewhere in
the ~40-50 hour mark I'd bet.

I'll miss the glass-wide theme for sure. Maybe at some point (though
I can't imagine it happening any time soon) I'll see what I can learn
about the new ui themes and see if I can take a stab at it.

However, one thing always confused me regarding theme development and
testing: How does someone do this if they're not running all the
various plugins? I don't use anything but mythvideo and have no
intention of running anything more. Is it even possible under those
circumstances? I'd think it wouldn't be.

From reading this I think I may end up using the Mythbuntu theme (in
spite of running on Gentoo ;)). I couldn't live with those horizontal
watch recordings screens personally, and I like having as many
recordings as possible on a page.

Tom

Check out the Blue Abstract theme - I like it quite a bit and I'm like
you - I prefer to see a listing of recordings then a horizontal rendition.

For the Blue Abstract theme: has anyone tried replacing the background
image with a different one? I tried simply replacing "background.png"
in the /images directory, but that didn't work...
