Hauppauge WinTV-NOVA-T-500 LNA Problems

Hauppauge WinTV-NOVA-T-500 LNA Problems

I'm trying to set up a new install using MythTV 0.22 RC1 & MythBuntu
9.10 utilizing the same hardware driving a working 9.04 system. The
tuner card is a Hauppauge WinTV-NOVA-T-500

I definitely need to have the LNA (Low Noise Amplifier) turned on to get
sufficient signal for a lock. The following did the trick under
MythBuntu 9.04

In /etc/modprobe.d/options add:
options dvb_usb_dib0700 force_lna_activation=1
and then
sudo modprobe dvb_usb_dib0700

This didn't work on the new install. I then changed
/etc/modprobe.d/options to /etc/modprobe.d/options.conf as suggested by
the modprobe warning.

Again, no luck.

Can anyone help?

Nevermind, it seems to have resolved itself after I did a cold reboot.

I find that the novat500board I have locks uip from time to time usually on
a warm reboot and a complete shutdown including removing the power cable
fixes it everytime,

My Nova T 500 has never given me a single problem. Possibly that's
because every time I update my kernel, I download, build and install the
latest v4l-dvb drivers, as explained here:
http://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/How_to_Obtain,_Build_and_Install_V4L-DVB_Device_Drivers.
And I use the latest firmware from here:
http://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/Hauppauge_WinTV-NOVA-T-500.

On the other hand, different versions use different chips, so I
may just have been lucky in which version I bought.

We see that too...looks like the firmware does not like cold
boots...removing the power completely does fix the problem though.

Can you confirm if you grab the latest firmware and recompile with eacxh
update as explained above, or do you forget to do that like me?

I can confirm that the Nova-T 500 issue with being in an unknown state
following warm reboots is a known issue. A user mailed me a board a
couple of months ago but I have been too tied up with other projects
to debug it. It only happens with the Nova-T and not other dib0700
designs because the Nova-T is the only product that has its own
onboard USB controller (and the problem is believed to actually be
with the Via controller and not the dib0700 itself).

Hi Nicolas,

The challenge here is that I've been busy with KernelLabs consulting
work for other devices, and things like the Nova-T and some other
devices are projects going on in my free time between projects. I'm
sure you can appreciate how open source Linux drivers that customers
are paying to have improved have to take precedence over the work I'm
doing for free.

That said, I'm hoping to get some time in the next few weeks to dig into it.

Was it you that told me that the info on the linuxtv wiki
is out of date, regarding the Diversity version being
unsupported. Or if not you, do you know if the Diversity
version is supported. It's just that if it is, I want
to delete those clauses from the wiki, but I don't want
to do so without getting the word from someone with
full knowledge.

That wasn't me. It was most likely Patrick. I know he has some
interest in doing some work on diversity support, but as far as I know
it is not currently supported.

running a Nova-T 500 for a couple of years on Fedora without issue. I also
use the cubbi tuxonice kernel builds to suspend my combined fe/be
(unloading and loading the dib0700 driver).

Sorry, should have been more clear - "Patrick Boettcher" was the
Patrick I was referring to. There is obviously more than one

Well, there are a couple of different products which people sometimes
refer to as the "Nova-T 500", including the "Nova-TD 500". Also, it
depends on the version of the kernel you are running, since the
regression was introduced in relatively recent kernels. Hence if
you've been running the same Fedora kernel for a couple of years you
might not have hit the issue yet if you haven't upgraded.

Many people never notice because they very rarely do a warm reboot of their PC.

I'm currently running Fedora 10 with the tuxonice kernel
2.6.27.24-170.2.68_1.cubbi_tuxonice.fc10.x86_6.

I do restart sometimes and haven't noticed an issue...

Output from dmesg -

dib0700: loaded with support for 7 different device-types
dvb-usb: found a 'Hauppauge Nova-T 500 Dual DVB-T' in cold state, will try
to load a firmware
firmware: requesting dvb-usb-dib0700-1.10.fw
dvb-usb: downloading firmware from file 'dvb-usb-dib0700-1.10.fw'
dib0700: firmware started successfully.
dvb-usb: found a 'Hauppauge Nova-T 500 Dual DVB-T' in warm state.
dvb-usb: will pass the complete MPEG2 transport stream to the software
demuxer.
DVB: registering new adapter (Hauppauge Nova-T 500 Dual DVB-T)
DVB: registering frontend 0 (DiBcom 3000MC/P)...
MT2060: successfully identified (IF1 = 1203)
dvb-usb: will pass the complete MPEG2 transport stream to the software
demuxer.
DVB: registering new adapter (Hauppauge Nova-T 500 Dual DVB-T)
DVB: registering frontend 1 (DiBcom 3000MC/P)...
MT2060: successfully identified (IF1 = 1214)
dvb-usb: Hauppauge Nova-T 500 Dual DVB-T successfully initialized and
connected.
usbcore: registered new interface driver dvb_usb_dib0700

development trunk) attempts to load dvb-usb-dib0700-1.20.fw

Correct, as Paul noted, the issue occurs in 2.6.28 and higher (and
you're not there yet).
