Expired vs Manually Deleted?

Is it possible to tell from the database which programs were expired and
not manually deleted.

Also, when exactly is the "watched" flag set. Is it set if a program is
played at all, played to the end, or perhaps something else.

Nope.

Unless you enabled, "Log MythTV events to database," and you check
(strings in) the in-database log before the auto-expire events are
rolled off the bottom.

Only when you tell Myth to mark it as watched.

Unless you enabled, "Automatically mark a recording as watched," at
which point it's automatically marked as watched when you exit playback
"near" the end.

Unless you set, "Action on playback exit," to either, "Always prompt
(excluding Live TV)," or, "Always prompt (including Live TV)," at which
point, "Automatically mark a recording as watched," won't work.

Unless you apply the patch on http://svn.mythtv.org/trac/ticket/5910
(for -fixes or trunk, depending on which you're using).

That's the short story. I may have missed some exceptions. :)

or if you enabled the setting, "Prompt at end of recording"; or if you
use JUMPPREV or JUMPPROG to switch to another recording; or if you use
the Menu to switch to another recording; or if you use network control
to exit playback
