Here is some useful information for channel changing with DirecTV:
http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Controlling_DirecTV_Set_Top_Box_%28STB%29_via_USB_or_Serial

The channel change script is in the External links section:
http://www.pdp8.net/directv/directv.shtml

I also have a DirecTV H21 using HD-PVR and control the H21 using
USB-to-serial cable. The HD-PVR is using the 1.5.6 firmware. No
problems here running it on a slave backend. My H21 is still set to
output everything at 720p though.

I am guessing the reason different people have recording problems,
while others don't, has to do with their STBs, and possibly their
channel change scripts. One variable you can play with, is adding a 1
or 2 second sleep to the bottom of your channel change script. With
the code currently committed to myth trunk, a 1 second sleep is needed
in my directv script for reliable operation.

Adding a signal handler for the HD-PVR removed the need for that one
second delay in the channel change script (as well as some other
hard-coded sleeps in the code), but causes problems for those people
using IR-blasters. While I came up with a solution, it became pretty
obvious that it would not be accepted for inclusion in Myth, so I
stopped working on it.

Hauppauge themselves strongly recommends using the latest version. I
guess they fixed something which could brick your HD-PVR.

Out of curiosity, is there a specific reason you're not using the
hdpvr driver built into the kernel? I can't recall what the current
F10 2.6.27.x kernel is anymore, but I thought there was a reasonably
up-to-date hdpvr driver in it...

Heh, I was actually wondering if the fedora kernel already had it in
there. I didn't think it made it into the mainline kernel until
2.6.30?

I use a shell-script wrapper around the perl script that George
pointed you at, to make it easy to control the two different STBs. I
can send that to you if you want -- when I get home.

I have a H20-100 and a H22-200, I think.

Hauppauge strongly recommends using the latest firmware.

Correct, its officially in the upstream kernel as of 2.6.30, but I've
been patching the driver into Fedora kernels since around 2.6.27-rc8-
git8:

...
* Mon Oct 06 2008 Jarod Wilson <jarod [at] redhat>
- Add driver for Hauppauge HD PVR

* Mon Oct 06 2008 Dave Jones <davej [at] redhat>
- 2.6.27-rc8-git8
...

I initially put it in for my own selfish reasons -- to use with my own
HD PVR -- but figured other Fedora MythTV users might benefit too. :)

And thank you for that; I have been running my HD-PVR with trunk on
Fedora 10, without any kernel changes. I have not encountered the failed
recordings problem although I do get lots of h.264 errors logged. I have
a few other problems (that I have detailed several times already that it
seems nobody else is seeing so I won't list them again), and have
considered upgrading to Fedora 11 to see if there is a newer hdpvr
driver; is there? (It's unlikely to fix my issues anyway because I
believe they have to do with playback, not recording, but may be worth a
shot)

I also had what seemed to be motherboard related problems with USB
in general and the HD-PVR in particular. I have an Asus P45 board that
just doesn't want to get along with the HD-PVR. Fortunately I had an old
non-vdpau mac mini lying around and I have the HD-PVR connected to that
now with minimal problems.

My HD-PVR backend seems no more crash prone than my master and both
are only moderately more crash prone with trunk versus 0.21.

Re: Failed HD-PVR recordings [In reply to]

Thank you for the script. I was using an old D10Control.pl script I found.
I'm now using the script below and it seems to be working OK.

I checked the firmware version that the HD-PVR driver was reporting from the
HD-PVR, it said the following:

hdpvr 1-5:1.0: untested firmware version 0xf, the driver might not
work

I updated the firmware on all three HD-PVRs that I have to the following:

hdpvr 2-1:1.0: untested firmware version 0x12, the driver might not
work

I downloaded the version from the
http://www.hauppauge.com/site/support/support_hdpvr.html site

It was version 1.5.6

I also have my HD-PVR to output 720p only.

So, I'll try this and report back in a few days if this solved my HD-PVR
failures. Only time will tell.

Thanks to everyone that replied for their help!!

Could you post your channel change script or send to me?

What model of STB do you have? I think mine is H21-???. I'm at work right

What version of the firmware in your HD-PVR do you have?

Here is some useful information for channel changing with DirecTV:
http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Controlling_DirecTV_Set_Top_Box_%28STB%29_via_USB
_or_Serial

The channel change script is in the External links section:
http://www.pdp8.net/directv/directv.shtml

I also have a DirecTV H21 using HD-PVR and control the H21 using
USB-to-serial cable. The HD-PVR is using the 1.5.6 firmware. No problems
here running it on a slave backend. My H21 is still set to output
everything at 720p though.

Re: Failed HD-PVR recordings [In reply to]

HI Again,

Another update. Looks like the change to the latest HD-PVR firmware 1.5.6
has caused some recordings/Live TV (1 out of 3) to have no audio. Most of
the time it seems to be on certain stations, like TNTHD or HDTV.

So, I moved one of my HD-PVR back to the previous version I had, 1.3.5. Now
the audio returns. But when switching Live TV, the front end crashes more
often.

Anyone know why the latest firmware causes audio to disappear?

Seems like every time I have one thing fixed, another brakes. Arrggg!

Thanks,

Kevin

It is very strange that that is the first error message in the log.
Something is really strange with your setup.

Are you sure that is the first error message in the mythbackend log?
I would expect some DevRdB prefixed error message to come before that.

By "latest" firmware, I assume you mean 1.0.5.6 beta? I'll give that
a try to see if it helps. It troubles me, though, that Hauppauge's
"released" firmware is labeld "beta" and can't agree whether it's version
1.0.5.6 or 1.5.6.0!

It's 1.5.6, there's no beta at the moment. I know what you are
talking about, it just appears it's been cleaned up now. The support
page now shows only the stable release, with no betas. This is
definitely the firmware everyone should be running, as it contains a
critical fix that prevents the HD-PVR from bricking itself under
certain rare circumstances.

Hi John,

Could you please post to the group the shell-script wrapper around the perl
script. I want to try exactly what you are using.

I'm also going to try to run the HD-PVR on windows with the latest firmware
to see if I have the audio problems I did on MythTV.

Thanks
Kevin

Re: Failed HD-PVR recordings [In reply to]

I'm not sure if this will help anyone, but I was having trouble
getting my hd-pvr working when running mythbackend as a deamon. It
worked fine if I started it from a shell. I simply added perl to the
beginning of my command, and it works like a charm, now.
