Interfacing Zotac IONITX to Analog TV

Interfacing Zotac IONITX to Analog TV

Hi,

I am considering getting a Zotac IONITX-C-U for use as a MythTV frontend and
am trying to determine if I will be able to connect it to my Toshiba CX32H60
TV, which has component (YPbPr), S-Video, and composite inputs. Basically,
I would like to know if anyone thinks this is easily doable (for example,
does the DVI connector supply analog outputs?). My preference would be to
use the component inputs if possible. For the time being I am mostly
interested in playing back recorded NTSC TV programs, and will not need HD
until such time as I replace the TV.

I asked essentially the same thing here a few weeks ago, plus I
searched the web far and wide, but I didn't find anything that would
suggest that this is possible. It seemed like it would require
spending around $100 on a VGA/TV converter, cheaper ones generally
being poorly reviewed. In the end, I got rid of the monster 160-pound
32" TV and replaced it with a 32" LCD TV, which can display even SD
recordings much clearer than the tube TV.

Thanks for your reply.

I had been wondering about those VGA to TV converters, but they did seem
like they would not do any favours to the signal quality. Unfortunately,
I'm not really ready to get a new TV just yet, so I'll have to think about
other options for the time being.

Certain types of DVI connectors come with analog pins that are easily
converted to svideo. For my older mac mini I was using the apple branded
converter dongle rather successfully.

The DVI on the newer macs seem to be digital only.

So not all DVI is created equal.

I have never liked the results I've ever gotten from VGA -> TV converters.

This could be completely wrong, but try looking for various
permutations of RGB or VGA to YUV or YCrCb converter. Also, a Google
search for "RGB to YUV conversion" through up some interesting
articles - YUV isn't the same YCrCb, though like many other things,
they're commonly confused.

Based on the discussion on this list a short while ago (Hey Allen...) I
went ahead and bought one o' that exact motherboard, and a piddly little
case to put it in etc.

I had thought the same question : How do I get my DVI output into a crusty
telly I have which doesn't have an HDMI input.

I came up with this, or.. something like this :

I'm figuring that should do the job, no?

Is the Zotac DVI port DVI-I or DVI-D? If it's DVI-D, that won't work.

DVI-I might be required, but I think the video card also needs to support a
"sync on green" signal out the DVI port, which I hear is ATI's specialty,
and only a couple nVidia's can do. Is the 9400M one of those "couple"?

It's really a shame that Zotac didn't include at least a composite
video output on their ION boards. There's room for one below the
power and antenna connections. Or at least a header on the
motherboard to allow some sort of low-cost add-on for displaying on
"legacy" TVs. There are 9400-based cards that have TV-out, so it
seems that it should be possible.

As far as I know, every cable/satellite HD box has outputs for non-HD
TVs. This omission, in my mind, prevents the Zotac board from getting
wide use as a silent frontend (for MythTV or any other media center).

I dunno. If you're really that concerned about legacy TV's I would
imagine that the nv9400 would be overkill. A "mac mini" style system with
an i945 should be more than adequate for the kind of content you would be
dealing with.

I actualy thought about getting a zotac board for my analogue tv. Mainly to
be future proof, for when I get a 50" lcd :)

Right now I'm using an via epia M10000 board, which is to the slow side. It
can show SD tv, but there isn't that much cpu power left in it, after
decoding mpeg2

Also, the zotac's can be bought without fans...

My goal would be to build one small, silent, low-cost, low-power
frontend that works with any TV or monitor that you have. Sure, the
9400 would be overkill for standard definition, but it's just fine for
high definition and then you have a single future-proof box.

Of course, to be completely general, you would have to add support for
the old channel 3/4 analog coax output... yuck. Even my DISH VIP211
high-definition receiver has that one.

Actually, the 9400 would still be needed even if your output was to an
SD TV, if what you are recording is HD. My house has more SD sets than
HD. I record all I can in HD, and it would be nice to be able to view
that HD content on my SD sets with a small quiet box. I've never
managed to get my AppleTV to do that (I know some have, but I've not
been able to myself).

It turns out that the Zotac IONITX board has a digital DVI output (DVI-D
not -A or -I) , and thus won't work with the dongle above. You would need
one o' them ($100) boxes that does the digital--> analog conversion.

Oh well. I have a couple o' tellys I can use this on, so I'm not out of
pocket or anything. I'll have to find a crusty machine with an S-video out
for my crusty telly...

Yes -- the board has DVI, HDMI, and VGA outputs. However,
well-reviewed VGA->TV converters are also in the $100 range.

I was hoping that it could be used with something like this :

Thomas,

That would only work for a TV with SCART input, or RGB input here in the
US, which is pretty rare.

It would work if the video card can be configured to output Component
Video on the Analog RGB pins, but as others have noted, most NVidia cards do
not.

The DVI connector *appears* to have the Analog pins on it, but that
doesn't necessarily mean they're connected to anything on the
motherboard... :-(

Thought that the SCART was a global standard on TVs.. But it might only be
an european standard then? Oh well, I have scart on all my tv's, so I could
probably use it.. Only problem is money... I don't think my wife agrees that
I should spend more money on toys (that's her opinion on my myth
experiments)

I think so. I've never seen a U.S. TV that had a SCART connector. I
think I may have seen a couple of older professional video monitors that
had it. I think S-Video (separate sync and luma signals) mostly filled
the same niche here.

Hell no! There is a wikipedia page on scart but wikipedia isn't
loading for me this morning.

Well it's certainly standard on TV's in Europe -
we can thank the French for that. It might not be
the best connector in the world, but having a
standard was quite a revolution !

Whether it supports RGB or not depends on the TV.
Mine has two scarts, IIRC one does RGB but not
Luma/Chrome (aka SVideo), the other does
Luma/Chroma but not RGB, both do composite.

I am a little late reading the list but I see you found out that there
are three DVI specs and only 2 of them support analog and almost
everyone is the third.

I have a fairly high end consumer VGA to S-Video converter and it is
crap. Seems like it should be easy to do but I must be missing
something. VGA is just the three colors plus horizontal and vertical
sync. Component just adds the sync signals to two of the color
signals. S-Video is more complex so perhaps it is possible to find a
cheap VGA -> component converter. I see that there are converters in
the $ 60 range but I have no knowledge if they are any good. Perhaps
someone else on the list does.
