gentoo VDPAU ported ebuilds or alternatives?

Hi All

I've had a system running on Gentoo for a while, but in an effort to consolidate
power usage I am moving my backend to my general home
file-server/firewall/router. Let me know if this is a bad idea first....

I have VDPAU capable cards for my two frontends, but have been waiting patiently
for the 0.22 release of MythTV.

I am not the most patient person so I was wondering about a few alternatives to
make use of VDPAU on my frontend machines.

1. Running Gentoo on my backend with the most current 0.21 ebuild. . Using a
custom ebuild for the patched version (either making my own or using this one
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-731657-highlight-vdpau+mythtv.html)

2. Running Gentoo on my backend with the most current 0.21 ebuild, but using
mythbuntu (or ubuntu normal) with Jean's patched versions of 0.21.

3. Any other alternatives that people might suggest.

Lastly, I could always keep waiting for 0.22 and for it to make it into portage..
if people think that it is getting close (say within 6 months) as my frontend
systems are powerful enough to do fairly good de-interlacing.

cheers

Allan Klinbail

Thats not going to happen for quite a while. Better look at alternatives.

I have had great luck with JYA's ubuntu packages. Its been more stable
than the unpatched code.

Even after release, expect a whole bunch of issues as this is a complete
overhaul of the code and is very poorly tested. Before you start flaming
me, poor testing is normal for linux code as there is not a big
MicroSloth style beta program to iron out the bugs. We simply do the
best we can and release code and then fix the stuff that gets reported.

I'm currently running a Gentoo based 0.21-fixes combined backend and
frontend and I also have a mythbuntu frontend-only using Jean's patched
versions. So I can confirm that this works (if nothing else).

Personally, I'd never considered using mythbuntu until VDPAU came along,
and I was impressed at how quick and easy it was to get a frontend-only
machine up and running. So I'd recommend this approach.

If I get around to buying a VDPAU capable card I'll be taking that
approach, as I'm already running both my frontend and backend with
patched ebuilds of rev 20500 already. I've always found that very
easy to do. Speaking of which, if anyone knows of a fanless low
profile PCI-e card capable of Advanced 2x de-interlacing, let me know.

I was surprised to see that recent ebuilds in portage no longer pull
from SVN but rather download a tarball from the mirrors. That means
you can no longer rename them to pull in newer revs. The ebuilds I'm
using were copies of older ebuilds that used SVN. I don't know why
they made that change. I think people were griping that emerging was
sometimes failing to pull in from SVN...something that never happened
to me in countless installs.

I have the patches in my gentoo overlay.

Installation instructions for my overlay are in the wiki:

then install media-tv/mythtv-0.21_p20549 and also any of its plugins.

I recommend you do

quickpkg media-tv/mythtv

before you install so you can easily go back to the previous version with

emerge -K mythtv

BTW, I have just commited mythtv-0.21_p20658 with the vdpau, hdpvr and
opengl patches to my overlay. This also includes most if not all of
the plugins bumped to 20658 as well.

Hi

I've added your overlay but I still don't get the listing for that
version when I do an emerge -pv mythtv.. I have enabled the ~amd64
keyword or is this masked by **?
